PARKER, Ronald rrjparker@aol.com "...I served two years as a Parachute Rigger in FASRON-119 from April 1952 until APril 1954 at NS Sangley Point, Philippines. It was a growing up period for me. I was only 17 when I arrived fresh out of Lakehurst. I later served in FASRON-119 and VP-6 at Oak Harbor, Washington. As I retire I have to give thanks to all the training and guidance given me by the older people I served with. This made the tour fruitful and leaves me with many good memories. One thing that has always bothered me is why I was sent on a 30 day TDA to the USS ORCA CVA 249, a tender. They also sent a second class storekeeper. M. Able. They had no parachute loft, they didn't seem to have an assignment for me and the ship went to odd place. It went up the Saigon river (remember the French were still fighting there in 1953) and picked up Vietnamese sailors, then the ship went to Bangkok. Afte thirty days it returned to the Phillipines. As I guess it happens in the military some things don't have an explanation. Such as why would we go to Saigon and why did they send us. Anyone got a clue?..." [02JAN2001]

I was then assigned to ATU-700 NAS Corpus Christi, Texas where I attended Flight Engineers School. In 1954 (or 1955) I reported to FASRON-119 NS Sangley Point, Philippines (played on the Championship Basketball, Volleyball and Track Teams). I arrived at FASRON-119 the weekend that a FASRON-119 aircraft crashed off the end of the island. Got a swap to VA-65 on the USS Essex, back to NAS Alameda, California and discharged January 26, 1956..." [30JUN2005]

WITHERS, PR David E. dewwayne@aol.com "...I served with FASRON-119 from April 1952 to May 1954. My rating was Parachute Rigger. Chief Archer was in charge of the loft at that time. There were too many riggers so I transferred to the communications office and part of my job was sorting and distributing all the mail and I wrote the column for the squadron that appeared in the base newspaper. LT(jg) Harry Pffeifer was in charge of the communications center at that time. Other riggers then were Dick Sustad from New York and a fellow by the name of Parker from West Virginia. Would like to hear from anyone serving at NS Sangley Point, Philippines at that time..." [10FEB2004]
