Memorial Picture "...COLEMAN, Edward (Ned) P....My dad, Edward (Ned) P. Coleman, (USNA Class of 1945) was Missile Officer with VP-24 (probably about 1953-54, but possibly a little earlier). He has just recently died, and we are trying to find information about his career for his obituary and to satisfy our own curiosity. It is very interesting to see how my memories match up with actual history! I know where we were stationed and when, but I don't always have the most accurate understanding of what my Dad was actually doing while we were there. If anyone has any information that would be helpful, my sisters and I would certainly appreciate it! Thanks for any help you can offer...Margaret Coleman Soule soule@vermontel.net..." [21APR2002]

Memorial Picture "...COLOMITZ, John...I joined the United States Navy in December of 1967 in Jacksonville Florida. Another of the most memorable things during my enlistment was meeting a most unique fellow. That man was John Colomitz. Big John, as we called him was a strikingly handsom, upbeat and interesting guy who was about 6 feet 4 inches tall. He always had a mischievious twinkle in his eye, and a laugh that one could not help but be drawn to. John and I served together for many years. As an enlisted man, he earned his AirCrew Wings and served as an aircrew member in Antisubmarine Patrol Squadron VP-7F-2 based at NAS Jacksonville, Florida. He earned these same wings and service medal as I did. We flew many patrol missions off the East Coast of Florida keeping track of Soviet submarines, both conventional and nuclear powered. When we began service, we flew in the old World War II vintage Lockheed P2V Neptune's. Big John was honorably discharged from the Navy. John had the great misfortune to have contracted Multiple Sclerosis sometime after having left the Naval Air Reserves, and "shipped out" for that great port above. All who knew John, miss him very much, and will never forget his kind, engaging manner. If any of you who may find this, that knew John or served with us, have stories or pictures of John Colomitz, please contact me so that the information can be included in this tribute to him. Memorial Picture "...COX, LCDR Warren M...Warren M. Cox: August 5, 1919 - June 7, 2011 - On December 26, 1944 Mike Cox was flying his VPB-20 PBM Mariner on a night patrol mission when he spotted eight Japanese warships steaming in line. The Japanese raiding force consisted of the cruisers Ashigara and Oyodo and five destroyers. The Japanese force was attempting to shell the landing beach at Mindoro in the Philippines. Mike's bombs would not release and sometime later, after losing an engine, he landed his plane in Mangarin Bay, where he was immediately hit by gunfire from an enemy plane. Mike's Plane Captain was mortally wounded, the plane sank and the surviving crew members spent the night in the water before being picked up the next morning. As a result of his service in World War II Mike Cox was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and three Air Medals. Warren Michael Cox, Lcdr. USN (Ret) of Coronado went on his final patrol June 7, 2011. He died of natural causes at Coronado Sharp Hospital. He was 91. Mike, as his friends all knew him, was born August 5, 1919 in Silver City, New Mexico to Marie and Warren Cox. His father was an auditor for the United States Forest Service. He attended New Mexico State Teacher's College High School in Silver City, New, Mexico. After graduation he enrolled at Bakersfield Junior College and, while a student there, obtained an appointment to West Point Military Academy. Unfortunately, he did not pass the physical. In 1939 he joined the Army and was stationed with the Eighth Calvary Regiment, First Calvary Division, at Fort Bliss, Texas. After serving one year in the Army Mike enrolled at the University of New Mexico, where he played on the Lobo Tennis Team. Subsequent to the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, Mike joined the Navy and was designated a naval aviator on November 13, 1942 at NAS Corpus Christi, Texas. Mike served two combat tours during WWII. The first was as navigator of a PBY Catalina in VP-23 operating out of Tulagi in the Solomon Islands. His second tour was as Patrol Plane Commander flying the PBM Mariner in VPB-20 out of the Philippines. In 1946 he married Virginia Day of Winslow, Arizona, a secretary for the Santa Fe Railway. They settled in Monterey, California while he attended navy line school. They had two children. Mike's navy duty assignments included Naval Air Transport Service (NATS), Guam, and NAS North Island, San Diego, California where he flew the P5M Marlin. He was also Ground Control Approach Officer at North Island and Combat Information Officer aboard the Carrier Midway (CVA-41) during the 1958-1959 Quemoy Matsu Taiwan Strait Crisis. His final duty station was as Administrative Officer of VRF-32 Squadron at North Island. Upon retirement from the Navy Mike continued his studies at San Diego State College. There he obtained a Bachelors Degree and teaching credential in mathematics. He then taught math analysis and geometry at the newly opened Castle Park High School in Chula Vista. In addition he taught night mathematics classes at Southwestern College and coached the Castle Park tennis team. While teaching at Castle Park Mike received a National Science Foundation stipend to attend summer sessions at Tulane University where he obtained a Master of Arts in Teaching in mathematics. Following his training in computer programming at Tulane University, Mike started the first computer programming class at Castle Park. During his days at Castle Park Mike enjoyed filming football games, playing tennis at the Hotel del Coronado and programming his TRS80 computer. After retirement from teaching he spent many hours with friends, whether it be on the tennis court, the Coronado Golf Course or at the Burger King Restaurant. He became a familiar sight on his three-wheeled bike around town. He always had a smile. "Mike really knew how to play the game of tennis," said Ben Press, former tennis professional at the Hotel Del Coronado. Press taught Mike's son Rusty when he was a junior tennis player. "Mike and I played many a doubles match together. He was a very smart doubles strategist," said Press. "He played late into life, until he could physically no longer run down the ball. He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him." Mike Cox is survived by his son Glenn "Rusty" Cox of Coronado. His wife Virginia and daughter Michele predeceased him. At his request, Mike's ashes will be spread over the Gila National Forest outside of Silver City. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 13, at the Coronado Municipal Golf Course. COATES, Richard (Dick) Retired rcoates654@yahoo.com "...I started my NAVY journey 9/55 with 3 yrs at GMAU-0411, Oceana (GF3); 12/58 GM div. USS Intrepid (GF2/AT2); 8/60 Kitty Hawk CVA-63 pre-com; 2/62; AT(B), (AT1); 12/62 VA-127 NAS Lemoore, California; My life changed 1/66 when I got orders to VP-17 via VP-31 at NORIS. I was destined to have the time of my life in the VP Navy. My wife was worried that I could get hurt flying in "one of those things!" I said "flying in a P2V is safer than walking the store." The next day there was a picture of a sinking VP-31 P2V on the front page of the local rag. They had cross feed problems, and the fans quit turnin'. They set her down alongside a Coast Guard cutter loaded with PSA stewardeses on a survival training cruise! (I don't think they even got wet.) After the RAG, I was assigned to VP-17 crew 12 with a great bunch of guys. PPC Charlie Cook, P2P Lee Houston, NAV Rick Tolly, TACCO is fuzzy, he was LT. ex QM, PC Snick Gramms ADJ1 (NY good guy), JULIE AT3 Rothlesburger, JEZ-(brain lapse.. I saw him in 79 at NORIS CPO club (he was a AWCS), AO1 Jim Young, and last, but not least AE2 Robert J. Prestovic our token electrician and fantastic scrounger. (He "borrowed" a trailing wire weight from the Coastes at NS Sangley Point, Philippines! I needed a spare, but I made him take it back anyway.) (Ski is USCG ret now.) We had a good deployment to TSN Saigon, but when the skipper said we were going home and returning asap (6 Mo) I was struck with this gawd awfull dumb-ass attack and said, "I not goin', my enlistment is up in 6 mo." JUNE 1967 I transferred to reserve VP-891 at NAS Sand Point, WA. Which became VP-69. Flew with a bunch of good guys there for 3 years, but I missed the REAL NAVY! July 70 transferred to VP-6 at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii. I flew for a while, but not assigned to a crew. If I remember right they had more than enough flyers, and short on folks to keep em flyin' so I spent most of my 3 years there in WC210 with AXC Domier, AT2 O.T. I flew 485 (485 was in Fort Rucker, Alabama so maybe that was not the tail # I took to Gifu) as the PC to Gifu, Japan via PI, Taipei. Had to replace a generator in Taipei, took 3 days, damn. It's a miracle we got off the ground as everyone had bought records, and books and our bags weighed a ton..." [08AUG2004]

We served throughout the Pacific, including Guam, Japan, Okinawa, Korea, etc. I met lots of nice friends during this tenure and enjoyed my entire time. I crewed on CF9 but when Korea was invaded and my squadron deployed back to Hawaii, I was left behind to form a 3 plane detachment to go to Okinawa. Same thing happened when my squadron was deployed from Itami Japan back to Hawaii. This 3 plane detachment moved to NAS Atsugi, Japan and we remained there to work with the reserve squadron relieving us. I would be glad to converse with anyone there. Enjoyed the Las Vegas Reunion in 1997 immensely. I also served with VP-10 NAS Brunswick, Maine from 1955 to 1957. I flew as Plane Captain on HK 4. COOK, Ralph L. bluesgtar@redrose.net "...I served in VP-44 from January 1960 to October 1963. I was thrilled to find this site and immediately bent my brain trying to remember names and adventures to tickle the memories of others. I served my whole tour of duty in VP-44 beginning in January of 1960 and extending to October of 1963. I was on the P5M beach crew in NAS Norfolk, Virginia and I remember how cold Willoughby(sp) Bay became on some of those nights in January and February. I advanced to the metal shop under two chiefs one nicknamed "Pappy" the senior chief's name escapes me. There was an Dakota Indian named Ted Lague, a really nice guy. There were the Cota brothers, Richard and ? Richard Morgan of Thornwood, NY, and a host of others in that shop. We went to the Rappahanock River with the squadron where we joined with the USS Albemarle, a Seaplane Tender. I fell asleep on the wing of a P5M and got second degree burns..Ouch! I remember Billy Delaney from Brooklyn NY and Carl "Robbie" Robertson from Pennsauken NJ. There was Robbies buddy Joe CARR, an AO3, he was a crazy man if there ever was one. I liked him just for the fun he was. The transition to P2V's was not easy. We lost LM-5 in key west, it burned to the ground. We lost LM 4 in NAS Norfolk, Virginia when Lt Vincent forgot to put the gear down after a dozen 'touch and go' approaches. Lt Vincent was well liked by all and we hated to see that happen to him. We went to NAS Sigonella, Sicily with our P2V-5F's and I managed to get on the crew of LM-4 BU NO. 131453 with LCDR Stephan and ?? There was a radioman named Hugh Oliver Talley whose name and initials on his shirt spelled Talley HO! We had an ordnanceman on that crew who was Huge, a black man who was from Philly. I wish I could remember more names. In NAS Norfolk, Virginia there was Jerry Fann and "Big Charley from NC, There was a man named Reggie Fear and a Plane Captain named Paul Owens and one named Walters. The hot comedy album in the Barracks was Dave somebody with a lot of southern humor. In NAS Sigonella, Sicily we did a "Med Fam" cruise to Venice, Rome (saw pope paul?) Pisa and Naples. Then on to Morocco to use our SARA gear to track John Glenn in Mercury 7, Just in case. That was quite a high point. We also stopped in Marseilles France and Rota Spain where I swear I saw a U-2 spy plane sitting out on the Tarmac. In NAS Patuxent River, Maryland I met a girl over at St. Mary's JC and we flew high over Maryland for a while. I played Guitar with a small group off the base in NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. The tenor sax player is still a friend today. He was a radioman his name is Douglas W. Lloyd. He is famous for backing into a P-3 with a stakeside truck, I think it was LM-1. Doug is now a successful engineer with Motorola in Phoenix. I have an injection molding business in Lancaster County PA, "Dutch Country". If anyone from that era would like to get together, I am game. If you are visiting Pennsylvania Dutch country, I am your host..." [25DEC99]

I was in VP-6 and was detached to be apart of the ground crew during the Christmas Island atomic testing. What a trip that was. I have run across two old Shipmates through this forum (boy they must be old...I was a kid then and I'm OLD now!). Chief R. L. Collins and Chief (E-6 when I knew him) Ernie Grims. I made one an a partial NAS Iwakuni, Japan trip with VP-6 as an AT1. I was a part of the cruise book...where I met Ernie Grim ADR1. After my VP tours I was stationed at Hickham AFB to a research and develop outfit called N.A.P.O.G. Can't tell you what it means...have to killya. I detached myself after 15 years 9 month to become a minister. Best move I ever made. I still remeber the great and not so great men who shaped my young self those few years of my life. AE1 Eck are you out there?...I served with VP-28 based at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii (Circa 1962). We deployed to NAS Iwakuni, Japan in November that year.. CDR L. A. Kurz was CO and CDR R. T. Folsom XO. I was an AT1 and part of the Crews Book staff. I recall redrawing the Squadron Logos (the one Axing the sub and the one just below and to the right of it). I drew up Crew patches as well and the guys had them stitched. I got of flight status before we went to NAS Iwakuni, Japan. I got trash canned to Pubs and Electronic Material Changes as punishment. The three things that could fail us at ORI was these two and something else - don't remember the third. Go figure. I was banished to a most sensitive job. We were four years behind when I took over. It took me four years to get caught up. Any body remember that November NAS Iwakuni, Japan trip of 1962?..." [BIO Updated 22NOV99 | 04MAY99]

I went to a VA squadron on the U.S.S. Nimitz (VA-82} and that is where I spent my next three years. That was interesting, and if I recall correctly it took about 6 weeks to get all 12 P5's to NS Sangley Point, Philippines. #9 was used for spare parts and just about the time we would get it ready to launch, we would have to rob it of something else. Finally when it came time to rotate back to NAS North Island, San Diego, California, we had all tweleve flying and we left all planes for our replacement squadron. A few months after we rotated back to NAS North Island, San Diego, California (and the nickle snatchers, one of the P5's we left exploded while taking off in Manilla Bay. I am retired from civilian life also, but am an extremely busy person, but looks like it is going to be up to me to wake people up about VC-3, by donating some photos and articles, that I (thank God) saved years ago ! Another thing, I'd like to apologize (a little late I s'pose) to my crew for nearly almalgomizing us with Pinnacle Rock just South of St. Mathews Island up in the Bearing Sea. With all the APS-20 radar anti-clutter circuitry in play in that ice cluttered sea, Pinacle Rock really did look like the mother ship for that Soviet fishing fleet we were rigging. Special apologies go to our Navigator and Taco MacDonald who happened to be sitting up in the Bow and first saw that tall rock coming out of the fog. It's pretty scarry having to take a steep turn like that when you're flying that close to the water (remember the sister squadron VP-2 plane that came back from MAD runs with their searchlight all smashed to smitherines?). Hey Mac, don't you wish we had had this new-fangled satalite navigation gear back then. Anyhow, I sure miss(???) those 9 to 12 hour tracks; the poker up in NAS Adak, Alaska, and the salmon fishing at the mouth of the Buskin River in Kodiak. Those were good days..." Joined VP-46 in September at NAS Moffett Field, California in September, 1963. Five of us went to Shemya, Alaska to set up electronic maintenance vans 1 month early, just in time for the March, 1964 earthquake at Anchorage. It was during this tour that, I believe a young man by the name of Noble, urinated on a statue in Tokyo, Japan and got the entire squadron restricted from future R&R there. Spent the next tour (again early deployment a month in advance of the squadron) at NS Sangley Point, Philippines, May, 1964-Jan., 1965. Like many, my active duty was extended several months because of the Vietnam War. I remember Kelly, I think it was, who got a cut finger during a landing incident at NAS Moffett Field, California. And VP-22 losing an entire crew in the Bay at NS Sangley Point, Philippines right as we were relieving them for their rotation back to NAS Moffett Field, California. I went on to San Diego State University and was treated like a pariah because I was a veteran. What a bunch of lost kids there were on most campuses. Ended up working as as an Engineer, Engineering Manager, etc. for Pacific Bell/Pacific Northwest Bell from 1970-1981. Did a career change into Counseling Psychology and as a part of my practice spent 10 years at the Utah State Prison as a Psychologist. Also spent time as a probation/parole counselor for Salt Lake County. Also, as part of my practice, ran 21 groups a week for youth offenders for 3 school districts. Spent 16 years teaching on a university/college level and am now teaching in the Newport, Wa. area as part of our retirement plan. One favorite memory was teaming up with Gary Maurer (sp) to defeat two base medical doctors(at NS Sangley Point, Philippines), in badminton. Neither Gary nor I had played much before. The two docs had decided 2 VPers (especially enlisted men) were no challenge. By some stroke of incredible luck, Gary took first place and I took second place after defeating both docs. Then we teamed up to beat them again in the doubles tournament. Not bad for a couple of young kids several thousand miles from home..." [18MAY2001]

I returned to WestPac in August 1968 as an AE3 "MAD-MAN" with Crew 12 (The Dirty Dozen), flying Market-Time patrols and Operation Yankee-Time over the Tonkin Gulf. My good buddy AE2 Bob Coffelt was on YB-5. Are you out there, Bob? A couple days later we came through NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii while they were filming "TORA, TORA, TORA"!
