 "...EVANS, Douglas T...Douglas T. Evans, Master Chief, U.S. Navy, Retired., passed away Saturday January 3, 2004 in Jacksonville. He was born February 28, 1942 in Andalusia, AL, the son of Ernest W. Evans and Grace Taylor Evans. He retired from the U. S. Navy following 30 years of distinguished and decorated service and was employed with Raytheon Corp. For the past 12 years. Mr. Evans was a long time resident of Clay County, a member of the Baptist Faith, and member of the Green Cove Springs Lodge #116 F.&A.M. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years Myra L. Evans; his daughter Angie Crutchfield; his sons Chris Evans and wife Sabrina, and Jeff Evans and wife Lisa; also 8 grandchildren, his mother Grace Evans, brother Gene Evans; and his many friends in the community and at Whitey's Fish Camp. Funeral services in celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday January 7, 2004 in the chapel of JACKSONVILLE MEMORY GARDENS FUNERAL HOME, 111 Blanding Blvd., Orange Park with Rev. David Tarking ton officiating. Burial will follow in the Gardens of Prayer at Jacksonville Memory Gardens. Full military honors will be conferred..." I went right into the Aircrew Division where I stayed until February 1957. I had over 300 hours logged when I got out. I crewed on both the AF and S2's and was qualified on all seats. Got my wings in 1956. I was lucky enough to be assigned to go to the National Air Show in Oklahouma City in 1956. I was the skinny redheaded kid that ran the electronics parts department when I wasn't flying. I would be happy to hear from anyone who was there when I was. It was the most exciting experience, life altering, party party party, and still go fly times of my life! I miss the friendship and comraderie. I miss the Philippines deployments, but most of all, I miss the professionalism(sp) that we all had when it was time to do our jobs. We were the best at what we did! We trained, we tested, we partied, and we succeeded and surpassed what others had done before us. Now our kids or friends and neighbors kids have to carry the responsibility of defending our country. They don't have the luxury of serving our country during peacetime like I did. I don't worry or fear for our defenders because I know they are the best in the world. They know what's at stake - they will give their all. For us and those who disagree with us God Bless all serving our country now. My respect and prayers to all Sailors, Marines, Army, and Air Force! OK and Coasties. I give all my support to all our servicemen/women serving now and hope we kick butt on all our enemies. It's what you (and us old butts) trained for and I know you're going to make us proud. Where is T. C. (Top Cat) Stevens my Engineer and Greg Smock my smelly AO "roommate" in the Philippines from 1975 through 1976? Probably still driving the porcelein bus? I've talked to Don Waugh, Randy Weisgerber, boo-boo, and Jackie Backoffer in the last 20 years. Where is the rest of you guys? I know your out there! Oh, just a reminder, YB-07 was cursed - we knew it and hated flying that bird! Finally starting to see some old friends names pop-up like Abe Villareal (is Chief Got still houding you to re-up?), Dave Hough (where's Kitty Katz?), John and Jim Zimmer (the best squadron insignia artist), Mark Weizenegger (hard to spell), and last seen at Boo-Boo's wedding. EVANS, CAPTAIN Ronald R. http://www.essex.navy.mil/WELCOME/SKIPPER/SKIPPER.htm "...Captain Evans earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Science. He was commissioned through the Aviation Officer Candidate School (AOCS) program in May 1979. After being designated a Naval Flight Officer in October 1979, he reported to VP-48, NAS Moffett Field, California. There he served as Legal Officer and Readiness Officer. During his tour, he completed two deployments to NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan, with detachments to NSF Diego Garcia; NAS Cubi Point, Philippines; NAS Misawa, Japan; and NAS Adak, Alaska. In January 1984, Captain Evans was assigned to the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland, as the Twenty-Fourth Company Officer. In 1986, he reported on board the USS AMERICA, home ported Norfolk, Virginia, as the Operations Administrative Officer. During this tour, he completed a Mediterranean deployment and qualified as Officer of the Deck (OOD) Underway. In November, 1988, Captain Evans was assigned to VP-31, NAS Moffett Field, California, as a Naval Flight Officer Instructor, Assistant Training Officer, and Administrative Officer. He served his department head tour in VP-46 as Tactics, Training, and Operations Officer from September 1990, to July 1992. In June 1993, Captain Evans earned a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island. Following Naval War College, Captain Evans reported to J5, USTRANSCOM, Scott AFB, Illinois, where he served as a member of the USCINCTRANS Strategic Planning Team. He reported to VP-1 as Executive Officer in July 1995 and Commanding Officer in July 1996. From July 1997 to May 2000, he was assigned to Chief of Naval Personnel as Deputy, Aviation Assignments (P43A) and Special Assistant to CNP for Minority Affairs (POOJ). Captain Evans reported as Executive Officer, USS ESSEX in February 2001 and took command in April 2002. Captain Evans' awards include the Joint Meritorious Service Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, Joint Service Commendation Medal, three Navy Commendation Medals, Navy Achievement Medal, and various service and campaign awards..." Flew ice patrols and ECM OPS out of NAS Adak, Alaska. I lost my NAF Naha, Okinawa, Japan cruise book during a divorce would gladly pay the shipping both ways just to walk down memory lane.
