Memorial Picture "...FLECK, Bernard A. Retired Shipmate Pix...My Dad graduated as a Mechanical Engineer from Coopers Union in 1940 which even by todays standards is at an educational level with the military academies. He was stationed in NAF Natal, Brazil as a co-pilot with VP-83 and VPB-107 from Feb '42 to Aug '43. After NAF Natal, Brazil he went back to NAS Pensacola, Florida with VPB-107 and VPB-114 and did flight training. As a family we were stationed in the early 50's at NAF Port Lyautey, Morocco with FASRON-104. From '58 to '61 my Dad was a pilot with VW-15 at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland, our family lived on base when the VW-13 flight crashed practicing "touch & goes". I was also aware of the mishap on approach to Greenland when it was so foggy that one of VW-15's flights simply landed short of the runway in the water. That resulted in constant practices of "touch and go's" at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland in pilots spare time. I was old enough to know what was going on. I remember my Dad telling me after one flight that his "super connie" was hit 7X's by lightning. And another time landing with 70 knot cross winds. After my Dad completed the (VW-15) Barrier Patrol in the '61 he was stationed in Denvile, NJ as the Naval Rep to Thiokol where the Navy was responsible for the developement of the single "throtlable" solid fuel rocket engine for the X-15. After he retired in late '62 from the Navy he moved to Cape Kennedy and did contract work for Technicolor and NASA during the space race to the Moon. Any and all pics from launch to landing on the moon, in flight video's and coming home were his responsibility to negotiate various contracts...c/o Lee Fleck ljfleck@bellsouth.net..." [06FEB2007]

I believe his last assignment was XO of VP-2 before he retired but I'm not sure. I only knew Don through my mother who was very close to him and with him along with his closet family members when Don's beloved P2-V Neptune quietly disappeared over the horizon. From what my mother said Don was "all Navy" to the end and never forgot who he served with and for. All I can personally add is "bravo zulu" Don for a job and life well done, you will be missed..." FLANAGAN, CWO Robert J Retired connemara@raven-villages.net "...I was assigned as Controller (not a pilot; an intel op) on Crazy Cat opns out of CRB in '68 and '69. I've just discovered this website, not having been on the net very long, but note some irregularities in some of the history. Small things but might be interesting to someone who gives a rat's rump, i.e., lots of confusion over CRAZY CAT vs CEFLIEN LION. Same outfit, same mission; sometime in '68 NSA imposed their trigraph lettering names on all ASA programs. One of the trigraphs assigned for use was CFL. Since there was already a patch with CRAZY CAT's famous kitty, brainstorms were generated to create a name utilizing the CFL trigraph and keeping the same sense of the outfit. Someone (I believe in the 224th Bn) bastardized "Sea Flying (Pegasus) Lion (kitty)" into CE FLIEN LION (CFL). The first two syllables were somehow merged, and we became CFL. The 1st RR resisted the name change as long as we could, but were finally forced to accept the will of the almighty from Meade. Like to hear from anyone who was there then or at times I was with other units in-country: 3rd RRU Air Section, 8/64- 3/65; S3, Hqs Co, 224th Avn Bn, 9/68-12/68. Also visited around all the four corps companies (138/144/146/156) as part of a standardization team with an instructor pilot. Also with White Birch 3/64-8/64. Mail: POB 100, Yellow Spring, WV 26865 Phone/Fax: (304) 856-3866 Interested in all contacts; working on a book which includes Crazy Cat activities..." [11FEB2000]

FLOW, ADCS Ed Retired vinnfizz@aol.com "...Hi there to all of my fellow VP'ers. This site has really been a trip down memory lane and a name dropping episode. I served with VP-22 (73-76) as my first command as a 2nd Mech on Crew 11, a member of "Platt's Rats" for the infamous Hobie Cat raid on Diego Grcia and then went on to VP-31, where I graduated to full F.E. status and then went to the "Golden Eagles" of VP-9 (77-79). Has anyone heard anything out of AD1 Jim Crow lately? It was there that I had the unfortunate episode of ditching PD-2 in the bearing Sea flying out of NAS Adak, Alaska in Oct 78. From there I went to the Naval Research Laboratory Flight Support Detachment. Following a per diem laden tour there I transfered to the "World Famous Woodpeckers" of VP-49 at NAS Jacksonville, Florida. The school house at VP-30 captured me from 85-89 and then I did the "Batmen" of VP-24 as my last flying tour. I transfered from there back to VP-30 as the QA Supervisor during the transition/consolidation with VP-31 and moved into Maintenance Control before leaving to join the "Black Raven's " of VQ-6 and going to the boat for my first time in 24 years. I just retired after 26.5 years active and my VP days will always be the highlight of my career...It has brought back many memories and names that I had forgotten over the years. Please contact me if you want to relive some of the good old days or just catch up..." [28FEB99]

Currently slated for deployment (OIF) as S2 NCOIC, 1-111 IN/56 Stryker Brigade Combat Team, PA Guard. A special 'HOWGOZIT' to VP-64 CAC 11 who caused the ASWOC to come up on the range net because THEY HAD NEVER SEEN A TARGET SUITCASED SO EFFECTIVELY that they had to compliment us. Best regards..."
