  "...MACK, Donald F...It is with a heavy heart that I share the news from our family of Don Mack's passing this morning. He fought the hard battle of cancer to his last breath to win the fight and ring the victory bell. Riordan and I were at his bedside watching him be at peace with his going knowing bells were being rung as he was piped above for his final tour. Friend, Husband, Father, Grandfather Don leaves behind a legacy of pride with his two children daughter Briana and her husband Ryan, son Riordan and three grandchildren Keelan, Declan and Ashlan - our leap year baby born on Feb 29th. His love of adventure and serving in the Navy around the world on the P3 platform as aircrew EWOP with VP-4, VP-30, VP-22, VQ-2 and VPU-1 from 1974-1994 giving him what he always said was the best job anyone could have. Following Navy retirement, Don worked for the USPS for 24 years before retiring this past November due to his cancer. Always involved with anything Disney, poker games, coin collecting, puzzles/codes/cyphers, traveling and for the last 18 months remodeling his home in Venice while going through chemotherapy. He wanted me tell all the stubborn males reading this and you know who you are to get a colonoscopy once you hit 60 or earlier. Don't put it off your family will thank you for it..." He graduated from Southwest Miami Senior High School in 1963. John joined the Navy in 1965, where he was a proud member of Patrol Squadron 31 based in San Diego, Ca. He then worked in the insurance industry until his retirement. He loved traveling in his RV and building model ships. John was instrumental in the preservation of Naval Patrol Planes at the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola. He was preceded in death by his parents, John "Jack" and Virginia Manville and is survived by his wife, Sherry and his daughter, Jamie. Mr. Marks served as a member of Patrol Squadron Eight of the U.S. Navy. He was employed at General Electric for over 30 years at plants in DeKalb, Holland, Mich. and Ft. Wayne, Ind. He was involved in many community activities during his life in Paw Paw - coaching Little League, as a Boy Scout leader, a member of the Paw Paw Fire Department, serving on the District 271 school board from 1967–1976 and he was a 50-plus year member of the American Legion. "...MARTIN, Frank Beamon Jr...September 12, 2011 - Chattanooga Times Free Press - Frank Beamon Martin Jr. died Saturday, September 10, 2011. He was born in 1933, in Statesboro, Ga., where he spent many happy summers with his grandparents. Frank received a degree in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Tech in 1956. While at Georgia Tech he served as president of Sigma Chi fraternity and sang with the Glee Club. In 1959, he began work with the National Security Agency in Washington, D.C. Later at Florida Tech, Frank took post-graduate mate courses in operations research. He earned a degree in psychology in 1978 and a Masters of Business Administration in 1982 from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. In 1958, Frank completed the United States flight training program at NAS Pensacola, Florida and served as flight instructor. In the Navy he flew fighter aircraft AD and anti-submarine P2 and S2. He was in command of two units in the Intelligence Community. He also worked with Pan American World Airways Guided Missile Range Division. Frank received the National Defense Medal and Armed Forces Reserve Medal and retired as a Captain in 1987. He was an FAA commercial pilot with a multi-engine instrument rating. In 1967, Frank and his family moved to Signal Mountain, Tenn. During this time, he was Professor and Department Head for Management and Accounting at Chattanooga State until his retirement in 1990. He attended St. Timothys Episcopal Church where he was a Sunday school teacher and was active with the youth group. He served two terms on the vestry, was head of the outreach program and sang in the choir. He also served on the board of FACES. Franks main love was flying and later sailing, hiking, camping and traveling with his family. Frank is preceded in death by his parents, Frank Beamon Martin Sr. and Alene Johnson Martin of Atlanta. Frank is survived by his wife of 53 years, Judith Fields Martin; three children, Elizabeth Anne Martin, Frank Beamon Martin III (Brigette) and Amy M. Smith, all of Signal Mountain; five grandchildren, Elsie Caroline Martin (Jesse), Margaret Caroline Shipley, Stephen Lee Martin, Ella Catherine Shipley and Joseph Houston Martin; one great-grandchild, Maxwell Prince Cayce; brother and sister-in-law, Ronald Edward James and Harriett Fields James, of Fairfax, Va.; many great-nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Timothys Episcopal Church on Signal Mountain. Friends are invited to visit at 1 p.m. before the service. "...MATTHEWS, REAR ADMIRAL H. Spencer...Died on Tuesday, September 24, 2002. He was the first Naval Aviation Pilot (NAP) to be promoted to flag rank in the Navy. Born in Clarksville, Arkansas, on May 5, 1921. Following two years in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), he enlisted in the Navy on April 15, 1940. After "boot camp" training at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Illinois, he was transferred to the Navy's fighter training Squadron FIVE at NAS Pensacola, Florida, (NAAS Saufley Field, Pensacola, Florida). In October 1940 he and his squadron were transferred to Miami, Florida, where they opened Naval Air Station, Opa Locka, Florida. Having won a state high school typing contest (120 wpm on a manual typewriter) he served as a yeoman striker until just before Pearl Harbor when he became aviation mechanics mate. His greatest promotion in his 33 years of naval service was when he sewed on that "crow" as AMM3c in August 1941. In November 1942, he commenced enlisted flight training in the 12th Bn. at the University of Georgia. He graduated number one in his class at the University of over 500 aviation cadets and about 40 enlisted pilot trainees. He received his wings of gold as a naval aviation pilot (AP1c) on August 15, 1942. Two weeks later he was promoted to Ensign. He completed operational training in the PBY-1 and the PB4Y-1 (Navy version of the B-24). In operational training he received a Navy Commendation for being the first student to complete the celestial navigation course with the perfect grade of 4.0. After the end of the war in Europe he became a test pilot at the Naval Air Test Center, NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. While there he became Naval Jet Aviator number 110. He was a graduate of the first test pilot class at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland in 1947. After a tour in VP-5, flying PV-2s and P2V-1s he attended Tulane University in New Orleans. During his 22 months (six semesters) he received his B.S. degree, Phi Beta Kappa, and was awarded the Annual Glendy Burke Award as the most outstanding student in the field of mathematics, his major. He attended the Naval War College for one year in 1957-58, and in 1965 spent a summer at Oxford University in England. In 1951-2, he attended the Naval Postgraduate School, General Line Course where he graduated first in his class of 505 naval officers. He flew 50 combat missions in Europe in the PB4Y-1, was the assistant air boss on a CVE Salerno Bay during Korea, and served five combat tours in the Vietnam War (three aboard carriers on Yankee Station in the South China Sea, one as the commanding officer of an amphibious ship and one in country as Rear Admiral as the deputy commander of U.S. Navy Forces Vietnam and as the Vice Chief of the Vietnamese navy. In 1953 the Admiral transferred from patrol planes to carrier aircraft. As the executive officer he commissioned VA-76, 1955, in Air Task Group (Wing) 202. In 1955 and 1956 he was "Top Gun" at the Fleet Air Gunnery Unit (FAGU), El Centro, CA. His squadron VA-76, was in Air Group ONE on the first deployment of the Navy's first "Supercarrier", USS Forrestal (CVA-59). During his naval service the Admiral commanded: Attack Squdron 113, flying A4D-2s, (1957-8), Carrier Air Group TWO abord USS Midway (CVA-41), USS Hermitage (LSD-34), USS Independence (CVA-62), as a Rear Admiral the Naval Aviation Basic Training Command at NAS Pensacola, Florida, and as the deputy commander of Naval Forces in Vietnam and Vice Chief of the Vietnamese navy, commanded all USN and Vietnamese Riverine foreces in the "brown water navy" in Vietnam. From Vietnam he was transferred to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations where he became the first head of the Aviation Training Divisions and aircraft carrier division, where he was responsible for the major introduction of Flight Simulators into training commands and the fleet. He retired from the Navy in August 1973, after over 33 years naval service. During his 33 years service the Admiral, while enlisted, was a Plane Captain on the O3U-1, F4B-4, F2F and F3F, F2A, BTD, BT2D. TBD. NJ-1 and SBC-3&4. As a naval aviator, he flew the N2S, SNV, SNJ, P2Y, PBY-1, PB4Y and 2, Spitfire (England), F8F-1, BT2D-1, YP-59A (1st navy jet), AD, F2H (Banshee), F9F-8, FJ-4B. F4H-1 Phantom, A4D, and his last carrier landing was in the F4H-1 Phantom at night aboard USS Midway in WESPAC, in 1963. His 36 medals and awards include: the Distinguished Service Medal (v), the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star (v), 11 Air Medals, both the JCS and Navy Commendation Medals, and 12 Foreign Medals, including the highest awards given by South Vietnam and Cambodia. The Admiral almost avoided being in an aircraft accident during his service, but not quite! His Army command helicopter (warrant officer pilot) crashed into the Mekong River in Vietnam when the engine failed on take off from one of his fire bases in the Delta of Vietnam. After leaving the Navy in 1973, the Admiral ran a congressional office (offices in D.C. and Florida) until 1979. He was a consultant to Martin Marietta Corporation from 1979 to 1991. He was the president of four small companies he founded in D.C., Florida and Louisiana. He served on the Board of Directors on two corporations, The Naval Mutual Aid Association, a trustee on the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation, and was on the boards of four charitable foundations. The Admiral lived in Falls Church, Virginia. He is survived his wife, Diane Ford Matthews; daughters and sons-in-law, Kathryn and Graham Lovering of Cornwall, England; Patricia and James R. "...MATTON, CAPTAIN W. G.  ...In February, 1941 Captain Matton received his commission upon graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy. After serving two years on USS WASHINGTON, he was awarded his Naval Aviator wings in November, 1943. Following a tour as a flight instructor, he became Executive Officer in 1945, of Photo Squadron 4 (VD-4) which was engaged in mapping operations of post World War II China. Captain Matton was later to serve as an intelligence officer on the staff of CINCLANTFLT, as Executive Officer of VP-24 and then to attend the U. S. Naval War College. In June, 1951 he commenced a tour of duty with the Central Intelligence Agency and then served as Executive Officer of the USS CORREGIDOR. In April, 1954 he took command of VP-5 which won the CNO Safety Award in fiscal year 1955. Captain Matton then went to the U. S. Naval Photographic Center as Executive Officer and to Commander, Fleet Air Wings, Atlantic as Assistant Chief of Staff for Readiness. Captain Matton was on the faculty of the Armed Forces Staff College from 1960 to 1962. Captain Matton was Commanding Officer USS DENEBOLA from August 1962 to August 1963 and then Commanding Officer of the Naval Reconnaissance and Technical Support Center until December 1965. He was Commander FAW-2 from February 1966 until May 1967 and FAW-2 received the Navy Unit Commendation during this period.  "...MAZUR, Julius...Dad was a member of Naval Air Transport Service Command, Pacific Wing, Squadron VR-11, serving as a crewman onboard R5D aircraft and totaling 1,500 hours flight time from July 1945 to December 1945. The majority of flying took place in CENtral PACific (CENPAC) and WEStern PACific (WESPAC), with an occasional trip back to NAS Oakland, California. H is logbook entries indicated destinations such as Johnston Island, NAS Kwajalein, Marshall Islands, NAS Tanapag Harbor, Saipan, Marianas Islands, Manila, and NAS Agana, Guam with the return leg in reverse order back to Honolulu. After the Japanese surrender, his logbook entries indicated flights into Tokyo, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. Dad razzed me when I enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1973. However, that became good banter back and forth over the years with an occasional unexpected jab or indignity thrown into a conversation about the other’s branch of service. Dad passed away in September 2014 at the age of 89. I was just looking through Dad’s aviator’s logbook again and it occurred to me there is an indirect service connection between the two of us. In the Coast Guard I was an ET specializing in radio transmitter stations for LORAN A systems. LORAN A was state-of-the-art technology in the late stages of the war for long distance navigation. During my enlistment in the Coast Guard, I was stationed at a LORAN A station in Northern California which was part of the chain of stations up and down the West Coast. Navy pilots likely used that system when flying into and out of Oakland. I was then stationed in CENPAC on Tern Island in French Frigate Shoals located in the middle of the Hawaiian Archipelago. That station was paired with the LORAN A systems located on Kauai and Johnston Island. That LORAN A system, along with others, was also very likely used by the pilots flying with Dad and so many other crews as they journeyed across the vastness of the Pacific Ocean. He served as an ARM 1/C in VPB-63 from 1942 to 1945, based first in Jacksonville, Charlotte and Key West. From 1/44 to 7/45 he was in the Utility Squadron out of Port Lyautey, Morocco and participated in the invasion of southern France, between St. Maxime and St. Raphael, attached to the Free French Naval Air Group (he spoke French). MALTA, Anthony J. ajmalta@earthlink.net "...Joined VP-8 for two years active duty (USNR) as SN in 1958 when it was based at NAS NAS Chincoteague, Virginia., flying P2V-5s. Duty in the boondocks; best and nearest liberty was Crisfield, Md. where one could at least get a decent seafood dinner. An office type, I served with the squadron as education yeoman, and flew as observer/nosegunner in the gunless front nose seat every chance I could get; generally with Lt(j.g.) McArdle in plane LC5 -- he from Detroit area and would often get required flight time in by flying to NAS Grosse ILE, Michigan on weekend trips when he was off. Made several ops flights, too -- including one crash landing at NAS Jacksonville, Florida. Many good officers in squadron then, including one who was killed in an aircraft crash in South America after he had transferred. I served with VP-8 until it relocated to NAS Norfolk, Virginia in late 1958 -- shortly thereafter, promoted to JO3 and transferred to USS Greenwich Bay (AVP-41). Still have many memories of the squadron and its people (including some home 8mm movies taken at NAS Chinco), standing frigid ramp watches trying to stay out of the snow and wind in the nosewheel wells, those horrible "box lunches" packed aboard for 8-hour patrol flights and all the rest of that fun stuff..." From there I transfered to NAWC Warminster, Pa. were I had the oppurtunity to see how all of the P-3 hardware and software gets developed and has the bugs hammered out. I left the Navy in '95 and have currently been rehired by the reserves to drill with VP-64 at sunny NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania.
