"...McDONELL, CAPTAIN Jack George Retired...Jack Mcdonnell passed peacefully in the arms of his wife Gerrie on October 1, 2013 at the Thomson-Hood Veterans Center, Wilmore, KY. Jack was my predecessor and model as the CINCSOUTH flag pilot. He was the OIC for the Catbird from 1958 to 1963 largely serving under Admiral Charles “Cat” Brown and thus the first pilot to fly the Catbird and later served under Admiral James Russell before I relieved him as flag pilot. Jack passed away last year and will be interred at Arlington on Thursday, April 10 2014 at 12:45 PM. All shipmates and friends of Captain McDonell are invited to attend. FUNERAL SERVICES FOR CAPT. JACK GEORGE MCDONELL, USN - Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia - Enter the cemetery from the Memorial Bridge side. Proceed to the right gate. Memorial services will be held at the Post Chapel (204 Lee Ave. Ft. Myer, VA 22211). Tell the guard you are going to Capt. Jack G. McDonell's funeral service at the Post Chapel and they will direct you there. Each adult in your vehicle must have ID ready to present at the gate. Park in the Chapel parking lot. Please be at the chapel no later than 30 minutes before the service (i.e 12:15 p.m.). After the service (which will last about 30-45 min.), there will be a processional following the caisson to the gravesite (Section 7A, Grave No. 105). You may walk in the processional, but all cars must vacate the chapel parking lot when the processional starts. If you are walking, please make sure you have someone drive your car in the processional to the gravesite, where you can find parking along the road a few steps from the burial site. Dad has earned a well deserved full military honors funeral, so there will be a band, six man body bearer team, bugler, caisson, escort, firing party, and bagpiper (graciously provided by a family member.) The piping of Amazing Grace will mark the end of the ceremonies. Capt. Jack George McDonell, USN, Section 7A, Grave no. 105..." "...McELWAIN, Robert H....With great sadness I am reporting the death of my father, Robert H. McElwain, to you and to his surviving shipmates. Born March 23, 1923 in Lyons, Kansas, he passed away peacefully December 1, 2005 at his home in San Clemente, California. He is survived by Helen, his wife of 30 years, and five children, Laurie, Robert S., Leslie, David and Mary, along with their children and many grandchildren. Also sharing in our sorrow are his younger brother William of Santa Maria CA (a TB pilot, USS Lexington) and sister Mildred Ruhr of Sun City, CA. Our father's youth in the Great Depression was harsh, he lost his own father at the age of fourteen and was raised by his mother Ellen to share her mid-western work ethic and strong Christian faith in the Methodist tradition. Like so many young sons he served with you during World War II, protecting shipping off the coast of Bermuda and as part of a squadron based at Dunkeswell, England. I had hoped last year to arrange a flight for my father aboard the sole remaining B-24, but poor health kept him on the ground until his final journey. After the war, my father received his college education at UCLA and joined Sears Roebuck and Company, retiring in 1980 as the Western Regional Controller/Auditor for its catalog division based in Los Angeles. I his later years he moved to Escondido and operated his own avocado grove, working also for the growers' cooperative as an auditor and government agency liason. We were lucky to call him "Dad." The memorial services will be simple and private, with my father's ashes to be scattered at sea according to his final wishes. Gene, I want to thank you for your service and express my admiration for all the men and women like you in my father's generation. Dad was never deeply involved in the FAW-7 Association, attending I think just one or two Reunions over the years. He did, however, cherish this awesome duty and experience with you all. He visited Dunkeswell once many years ago, and both my brother Rob and sister Leslie have been there as well. I will be sure to bring my own children there, and will share with them your names and heroic contributions to us all. Yours sincerely, David McElwain davidandamymcelwain@mac.com..." [07DEC2005]

McCAFFREE, CAPTAIN Burnham C. (Deceased) http://www.history.navy.mil/ar/mike/mccaffree.htm "...Burnham Clough McCaffree was born on 25 April 1903 in Canova, South Dakota. He was the eldest of four children of Charles David McCaffree and Ethel Clough McCaffree. He attended Sioux Falls College in South Dakota for two years before entering the United States Naval Academy in the summer of 1922. He graduated four years later in the Class of 1926. Ensign McCaffree served in USS Idaho (BB-24) and on the staff of Commander, Battle Force, and as an officer on board USS Nokomis, assigned to survey the coast of Cuba. He next attended flight training at NAS Pensacola, Florida, where he received his wings as a naval aviator in 1931. His initial aviation assignment was to Fighter Squadron Five (VF-5) on board aircraft carrier USS Lexington (CV-2). In 1933, he returned to NAS Pensacola, Florida as a flight instructor for three years. During that time, his students included Captain (later Fleet Admiral) William F. Halsey and Captain (later Admiral) John S. McCain, who were earning their wings prior to commanding new aircraft carriers that the nation was constructing. While at NAS Pensacola, Florida, he flew several experimental aircraft for the Navy, including the autogryo. Upon completion of that tour, Lieutenant McCaffree was assigned as Operations Officer to Bombing Squadron Five (VB-5) on board aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV-5) in the Atlantic Fleet and later in the Pacific Fleet. In 1938, McCaffree was ordered to be the first commanding officer of Observation Squadron Five (VO-5) at NAS Norfolk, Virginia. This squadron consisted of nine SOC two-seat seaplanes that were embarked in three battleships of the U.S. Fleet Atlantic Squadron and Battleship Division Five: USS Arkansas (BB-33), USS New York (BB-34), and USS Texas (BB-35). Rear Admiral Hayne Ellis, USN, commanded the Battleship Division. In 1940, Lieutenant Commander McCaffree was reassigned as the Executive Officer of VP-32, composed of PBY-3 Catalina seaplanes at NAS Coco Solo, Panama, Canal Zone. In 1941, McCaffree became the commanding officer of the squadron, which conducted anti-submarine operations against German submarines operating in the Caribbean after the outbreak of World War II. Commander McCaffree's next assignment, in 1942, was as Operations Officer and Chief Staff Officer of a new Fleet Air Wing of PBYs and PBMs in Key West, Florida. He then was detailed as the Head Sea Frontier Section, the Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Fleet's staff, and also Air Operations Officer of the Tenth Fleet in Washington, D.C. Admiral (later Fleet Admiral) Ernest J. King was Commander in Chief U.S. Fleet and Commander, Tenth Fleet. Promoted to Captain in 1944, McCaffree assumed command of USS Guadalcanal (CVE-60), whose task group conducted ASW hunter-killer operations in the Atlantic Ocean. In early 1945, McCaffree became the U.S. Navy Liaison Officer to the Commander, 29th Air Force (Major General Curtis LeMay, U.S. Army) on Guam. Following the end of hostilities, he served as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations on the staff of Commander, U.S. Naval Forces, Marianas. That was followed by his assignment to the Aviation Distribution Office of the Navy Department, and by his attending the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. In 1951, Captain McCaffree was the recommissioning commanding officer of aircraft carrier USS Wasp (CV-18), which then operated in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea. On 26 April 1952, during maneuvers in the middle of the night, Wasp collided with one of her escorts, destroyer minesweeper USS Hobson (DMS-26). Hobson sank in less than four minutes, taking 176 of her crew with her. McCaffree was absolved of any blame in the resulting court of inquiry. From 1952 to 1954, Captain McCaffree commanded NAS Jacksonville, Florida, with additional duty as Commander, Naval Air Bases, Sixth Naval District. His final assignment was as Vice Deputy Commandant, Industrial College of the Armed Forces. Following his retirement from the Navy in 1956, Captain McCaffree was the Executive Director of the Committee of 100 for the Jacksonville (Florida) Chamber of Commerce. In that capacity, he was instrumental in bringing a number of industries and corporation headquarters into Duval County and Jacksonville. He died in 1966..." [24JUN2003]

I was then in the last class to go through P-2V training in VP-30 Det NAS Jacksonville, Florida in '68. After joining VP-21 flying P-2V7's in November '68, like many others I was forced to change to the AW rate in order to keep flying. I was the Julie/ECM operator on CAC-XIV and made the final NAS Sigonella, Sicily deployment before they decomissioned us in November '69. I think the two worst things you could hear were "EXTEND PLE" and "WE'RE GOING TO SIG." I don't remember anyone pulling a WESTPAC deployment complaining as much as anyone that had been to Sicily. It seemed for a while that the best way to get decomissioned was to send me there. After the decomissioning, I was transferred to VP-26 already on a split deployment to NAS Keflavik, Iceland/Lajes. I converted to the P-3B RADAR/MAD position and later qualified in Accoustics. I made another trip to NAS Sigonella, Sicily and finished up with a NAS Bermuda deployment and a UNITAS trip in '71. I was a P-3C Sensor 3 ground phase and in-flight instructor with VP-30 in NAS Patuxent River, Maryland from '72 until their move to NAS Jacksonville, Florida in '75. I spent my final 10 months back in NAS Brunswick, Maine with VP-11 and separated from the Navy in July '76. Since then I have worked at NAWCAD NAS Patuxent River, Maryland at the Chesapeake Test Range.
