"...MIHANS, Andy Mihans "AJ"...I would like to sadly report the passing of "AJ" Andy Mihans. He and I went to A and B school together at Millington NAS in 1950-1951. We pulled a lot of fun liberties together. I called him today to tell him about my recent trip to Millington. It is not NAS any more. His wife told me about his passing away. His wife and I had a nice long conversation. I went to another school in NAS Norfolk, Virginia, and he went to a VQ squadron in NAS Norfolk, Virginia. I met him in NAS Norfolk, Virginia for the last time in 1951. I found him a few years ago and talked to him on the phone several times. I can kick my self for putting off getting together and now it is too late. I served with VP-7 from 1951-1954...Bud Michaels shirleybudvp7@aol.com..." [17JUL2005]
Circa 1945 "...MIKITA, ARM2 Ted E. "Theo"...My father, ARM2 Theo E. Mikita, passed away May 26th, 2004. Dad served with VPB-2 OTU 3 as a radio operator aboard the PBM-3 out of in out of NAS Banana River, Florida until reassigned to VPB-2 OTU 4 prior to shipping out (August 1944) to train on new PBM-5 at the Radar School in NAS Corpus Christi, Texas. Next the crew traveled to MCBH Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii and attached to VPB-100 for advanced training covering sleeve gunnery, ASW sonobuoy, and radar bombing. They were finishing this up when the atomic bombs were dropped in Japan. They made preparations for shipping out to the war zone, and reached Kerama Retto, Okinawa to join VPB-208 and the USS Hamlin (AV-15) on August 21. Crewmates were copilot Ensign Koch, S2 Lawrence "Smokey'' J. Verstraete, AOM3 Douglas H Watts, Sidney Lee Hawkins, AOM3 Donald Roy Battenschlag, Joseph L Mugnolo, and Arthur B Street. By then offensive operations had ceased for the most part while negotiations for the surrender of Japan were being carried out. On August 24, 1945 they tracked and bombed a Japanese trawler in the Chusan Archipelego. Flew in squadron formation over Tokyo bay as part of surrender ceremonies on September 2, then participated in occupation duties in Tokyo. The crew spent the squadron’s final days in theatre providing VIP, courier and passenger service between major water accessible cities in Japan including Tokyo, Nagoya, Hiroshima, and Sasebo. When the squadron transferred out in November Ted was reassigned to a new crew in VPB-26. VPB-26 was based initially out of Tokyo, and was serviced by the USS Hamlin (AV-15) (Yokosuka) and USS Bering Strait (AVP-34) (Sasebo) until the end of January when it relieved VPB-25 in Shanghai for service between Shanghai (USS Duxbury Bay (AVP-38)) and Tsing Tao. "...MIKULEWICZ, Mike...I would like to pass on the sad news that one of our VP-2 Shipmates Mike Mikulewicz passed away on Sunday December 12, 2010. I first met Mike when we were both in VP-2, flying P2's out of NAS Whidbey Island, Washington. He was in Crew 6 and I was in Crew 11. We did a WESTPAC Cruise in February of 1969 to NS Sangley Point, Philippines and NAF Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. We went our separate ways when the squadron was decommissioned upon our return to the states. This news is very hard for me to take. Mike was a true friend. He was my best man at my wedding in 1971. Mike was the kind of guy who would give you the shirt off his back without a second thought. I have never known anyone like him. Rest in peace Mike. "...MITCHUSSON, Richard "Mitch"...Richard "Mitch" Mitchusson passed away on November 19th, after a long, hard-fought battle against prostate cancer and Pick's disease. He had a life-long dedication to service and community; Mitch was well known and well liked by all. He was born January 3, 1939, in Bradley, Oklahoma, to Allie and Van Mitchusson. On his 17th birthday, he asked his mom to sign permission for him to join the Navy, leaving those wonderful hot Oklahoma summers of earning money cutting and baling broomcorn. In 1957 he fell in love with the Pacific Northwest during his assignment onboard the USS Boxer, which stopped in at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. In 1963 while stationed at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, he survived a plane crash onboard VP-17 at the NAS Kodiak, Alaska, one of only five survivors. In 1968 he qualified for submarine service and was stationed onboard the USS Stonewall Jackson, SSN-634; and later a short tour on the USS Medregal, SS-480. After a tour at BUPERS in Washington DC, he was assigned to the USS Seawolf, SSN-575 stationed at Mare Island Naval Shipyard from 1972-1974. After retiring from the Navy in 1975 as a Senior Chief Yeoman, he moved to Poulsbo and was hired in to the Poulsbo Public Works department, where he worked from 1975 to 1985, later reaching the position of Director of Public Works. In 1985 the next level of service called and he was voted in as Mayor of Poulsbo, and continued with dedication and loyalty until retiring in 1999. As Mayor, he was highly respected throughout the state, and was elected and served as Executive President of the Puget Sound Regional Council, working with the now U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Gary Locke. During his tenure as Mayor of Poulsbo, Mitch made daily trips through town ensuring "things" were okay, talking to the citizens and merchants to see if they needed anything, always sharing stories, hugs, and smiles. Some major accomplishments he will be known for include the Olhava/College Market Place area, the widening of Highway 305, and a Poulsbo branch of Olympic College. The Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce recognized and awarded him as their 1998 Person of the Year for "his unfailing commitment to the City of Poulsbo and his leadership in the community". He was a proud, golden member of the Poulsbo Sons of Norway, where he spent many mornings with his "coffee" buddies, sharing stories and political opinions and enjoyed Wii bowling competition Thursday evenings. He was a charter member of the Poulsbo Historical Society, a past member of the Poulsbo Lions Club, and member of the NK Friends of the Library. On June 1st, 1997, he married Barbara and lived in their Lemolo waterfront home, where they spent many evenings hosting get-togethers with friends. His parents, sister Alta Walker, and brother Harold Dean Mitchusson preceded him in death. He is survived by his first wife, Nancy Mitchusson, son Rick Mitchusson (Denise), daughter Rhonda Mitchusson, and his loving and supportive wife Barbara. In addition, he leaves granddaughters Jessica Edwards (Jon) and Sarah Meyer (Mark), and grandson Michael Mitchusson (Ashley Anderson); and nieces and a nephew in Oklahoma and Colorado. Donations in Mitch's name may be made to the Poulsbo Sons of Norway or NK Fishline Foodbank. A celebration of life will be held in early January. Read more: http://www.kitsapsun.com/..." MICHAELS, AL3 Maurice (Bud) shirleybudvp7@aol.com "...I served with VP-7 1951 - 1954. Our crew was crew 11 out of NAS Iwakuni, Japan in 1953. Our pilot was LT(jg) Volmer, Plane Captain was Moore, 2nd Mech was Bill Scherbon (who I am still in contact with), 1st Radioman was Rosalis and I was the 2nd Radioman. I think our crew flew the last mission of the Korean war on 27 July 1953. I would love to contact any squadron mates from that period of time. In those days most of us went to NAS Millington, Tennessee for A and B school. Three weeks ago I visited Millington with my wife who I met while going to A and B schools there, and my son and daughter in law. The base is not Navy any more. It was closed about half dozen years ago I was told. The water tower that used to have the rotating green lights is still there. The small hanger that we took some classes in is still there. At that time, 1950, it housed an Avenger and a few fighters, I thank Hellcats. They were used to show us how to take the radios out and to safety wire them in. The hanger now is being used for a great project. Volunteers have disassembled the famous Memphis Bell B-17 flying fortress and are restoring it. They are doing a beautiful job. They are giving very interesting tours of all aspects of their work and B-17 air craft. They are trying to raise money to finish their project. After seeing their good work it would have been hard not to drop money in the bottle they were using to make the collection. The base hospital is now part of the Shelby county Jail system. My daughter was born in that base hospital in 1953 while we, VP-7, were in Japan at the end of the Korean War. I took my first plane ride while there in 1950. The plane was a PBY-5A Catalina. My buddy, Andy Mihans and I did not have enough money to go to town one Sunday and we took a walk around the base. Some reservist were were running the engine on the Catalina. We walked up and asked for a ride, a ride I will never forget, even after flying in P2V for 3 years..." [E-Mail/BIO Updated 09JUL2005 | 27FEB2002]
