After completing the various stages of flight training in 1957, he held billets of increasing responsibility in several squadrons, VP-17, VP-31, VP-19, and VP-40. In VP-31 he was an instructor as the P-3 Orion entered the fleet; he served as executive officer and commanding officer of VP-40. In the mid-1960s he served on the staffs of Commander Anti-Submarine Warfare Group Five and Commander Patrol Force Seventh Fleet. After that he was a student at the Naval Postgraduate School, attended a course in POW survival, and was a student at the Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth. OpNav tours in the 1970s included ASW readiness and training officer and executive assistant to the Director of ASW and Ocean Surveillance, Vice Admiral Ed Waller. OSBORN, AT1 (AW/NAC) Stephen gapoz@cfl.rr.com "...Enlisted April 1980 and went to Great Lakes for boot camp. Spent a year at NATTC Millington, TN for initial training. Then on to SERE and VP-31 rag for Aircrew training. My first squadron was VP-19 from 3/82 to 5/85. Back to TN for C7 and bounce up to NADC Warminster PA to put all that edgimication to good use. That was the greatest duty - nothing like working with 3000 rocket scientists. My next stop was ASWOC NAS Sigonella, Sicily from September 1989 to October 1992 during Desert Shield and Desert Storm. For something completely different I took orders to AIMD Key West from October 1992 to October 1995. In my spare time I worked at the local Radio station as an Engineer. Back up north to VP-66 at NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania from October 1995 to July 1997 and finally stood up new squadron VQ-11 at NAS Brunswick, Maine July 1997. Retired November 1998 and moved to Disney Land..." [12JUL2004]

OSBORNE, CDR Dale Harrison Retired http://www.pownetwork.org/bios/o/o017.htm "...DALE H. OSBORNE - CDR - United States Navy - Shot Down: September 23, 1968 - Released: February 12, 1973. My place of birth is Salt Lake City, Utah, where I was born on 23 January 1933 to my parents, Vivian C. and David E. Osborne. On 1 October 1956 I entered the United States Navy as an Air Officer Candidate and reported to NAS Pensacola, Florida for pre-flight training. I received my commission on 1 February 1957 and was designated a Naval Aviator on 4 June 1958. From 1958 to 1961 I served with VP-9 stationed at NAS Alameda, California and NAS Kodiak, Alaska. I was Patrol Plane Commander of P2V-7 type aircraft involved with Anti-Submarine warfare tactics. From 1961 to 1964, I was assigned to VT-3, NAS Whiting Field, Milton, Florida, as a radio instrument flight instructor in T-28 type aircraft. In 1965 I reported to VS-21 at NAS North Island, San Diego, California and was a Carrier Air Plane Commander of S2E type aircraft involved with anti-submarine warfare. My squadron deployed to WESTPAC in 1966, embarked in the USS Kearsarge (CVS-33), conducting air operations in the Gulf of Tonkin in support of the U.S. war effort in Southeast Asia. The NAS Lemoore, California was my next stop in 1967 where I reported for transition and training in the A4F Sky Hawk aircraft. In December of that year I was ordered to Attack Squadron Fifty-Five (VA-55). The squadron deployed to WESTPAC in July 1968, embarked in the USS Hancock (CVA 19), joining yankee team operations in the Gulf of Tonkin conducting air strikes against North Vietnam. On 23 September 1968 my aircraft was hit by Anti-aircraft artillary immediately following a rocket attack on enemy positions near the city of Vinh, North Vietnam. Shells exploded in the cockpit area which knocked me unconscious and caused severe injuries to my left leg, right hand and wrist. I regained consciousness momentarily enabling me to pull the ejection handle before passing out again. When I next regained consciousness, I was on the ground - my left wrist had been broken during ejection or ground contact. I was captured immediately by a group of approximately 15 Vietnamese. After an extremely torturous trip North, I finally arrived in Hanoi on the 10th of October. I was completely desiccated, emaciated, and in a moribund state. I was incarcerated with Cdr. Brian Woods and I credit him with saving my life. I was confined in several prison camps in the Hanoi area during my 4 1/2 years of captivity. I was listed as MIA for over a year. I was released to the American authorities at Gia Lam Airport, Hanoi, Vietnam on 12 February 1973. December 1996 Dale Osborne retired from the United States Navy as a Commander. He and his wife Nancy reside in Utah..." [16APR2004]

I took part in three detachments, two to NAS Kodiak, Alaska and one to NAF Naha, Okinawa, Japan. After leaving the Navy in 1965 I had a 25 year career in law enforcement in a suburb of Chicago. I am happily married to my wife of 43 years, Diana and have two daughters and two grandsons. I joined the service with my best friend, Roger Hurst ABH2, and he too served with VP-17 during the same time period. I was injured while riding back to NAS Whidbey Island, Washington one Halloween night just North of the Deception Pass Bridge and spent 10 months away from the squadron at the Naval Hospital in Oakland California for rehab. As one gets older, I remember the times with VP-17 which I do not regret. Seven years ago the wife and I retired to S/W Missouri. Three years ago Roger and his wife of 45 years, Evelyn, followed and also retired 3 miles away. We meet often and our Navy past is always in our conversation..." [18NOV2008]

I have deployed to NSF Diego Garcia, NSA Bahrain and Japan. We participated in a mission against Soviet sub leaving Vladivostok. Funny when you think about it - since I was born in USSR and lived there are until I was fifteen. I might just be the first Russian born Shipmate allowed to join the P-3 fleet. A lot of people did not like that idea, but I showed and proved to them that they were wrong, and I am fighting for my country - USA! I am currently on instructor duty with VP-30 and just might come back to Hawaii next time around! I would like to hear from anyone and everyone!..." [03MAR2006]

I had the distinction, while working in NATOPS, to give Ensign John Herrington his observer checkride while on deployment to NAS Adak, Alaska. He is now CDR John Herrington, NASA astronaut and mission specialist. If you see him ask him if ever learned to put his gloves on for the fire of unknown origin drill.
