After the usual dog duty mess cooking, Security Division Gate Guard duty, I worked in Guard Support mostly on the GTC-85 jet starters. I loved those things, even pitched in for the Blues once with one of our units. Went throught Aircrew training OP5C (MAD and Radar) and F.C.P.C. training kind of a on-the-job as I worked on them too. The "VP Guys" were a good group and got our planes up and ahead of schedule. Not easy with 13 ADRs and as many planes. The Neptune was a tough aircraft and took a lot of punishment and once cruise was established she cruised happily. However, she didn't like sudden power changes. I was a student pilot and got some instruction and handel bar time as well. I loved her manners. I later got my commercial and multi engine ratings and appreciated what Lockheed builds and I still do. Our Neptunes are now TV stars seen often fighting wild fires. I still get a good feeling when I drive by on Lampson Rd and see the tower and mostly the same builings. It will always be NAS to me!..." [08JUL2018]

I was a very young electronics technician and following eight weeks at the Fleet Air Wing radio operator school in NAS Norfolk, Virginia spent the remainder of my time as an aircrewman on P5M's. The squadron was home based in NAS Bermuda. The squadron had P5M-1's that were later replaced with P5M-2's. During the time I was stationed there, the squadron lost one aircraft in a crash at sea during very high sea states. One aircraft also burned on the ramp. One incident I remember most is an open sea landing in the gulf between Key West and Havana. We lost an engine and when the drop tanks were released a fire ignited in the bombay under the remaining engine. The aircraft commander, I believe LCDR Hauser, made a precautionary open sea landing. The crew took to life rafts, but the fire went out and we returned with great difficulty to the aircraft and taxied into Key West. I am interested in hearing from anyone who was there during this time. One name I remember is Dave Vincent. He and his wife were at Bermuda during the time I was there..." That gave the Navy communications from Attu to ADAK. This was in October of 1943. All these years I have wondered what the pilots thought of the ADF Station on Attu (Instrument approaches). Where was the ADF Station located? They were just starting the station when I left Attu to go back to the States. What were the minimums on the approach plate and how far out could you pick up the signal? I understand that ADF Homer gave the pilots some safety when making it back to Attu. I moved from VP-62 to NAS Glenview, Illinois to serve with VP-60 (Mar79-Sep82) and VP-90 (Oct82-Sep84). From there back to NAS Dallas (Hometown) and what I expected to be my final tour. It was a different world there in VR-59 (C-9B) as a Flight Attendant and Crew Chief. That is a different world. Unfortunantly (or fortunately), I was advance and given a choice of VF or HC squadrons in California. Luck was on my side and I ended up in VR-57 at NAS North Island, San Diego, California. Well that was it, I finished my tour and transferred to the Fleet Reserve in Mar90 and became an unemployed drain on society. My wife convinced me that there is more to life than golf (especially the way I play). I went to work in Dallas and by July I was in Pittsburgh, PA. working for US Air as a Maintenance Training instructor. Well after 20 + years as TAR, training is sorta second nature. I was assigned to VP-11 ground crew. My memories of Chiefs Eckles, Fry, Lemon and Gaboriault are still strong after 39 years. I made 1st Class AX while on deployment to NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. At the same time and old salt named Stanley B. Grindle made Chief. SBG "Sugar Baker Golf" was a WWII sailor (that fact impresses me more more now than it did then). Stan took me under his wing about two days after I checked in to the squadron and I am still in his debt. We made 2 deployments to NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, two or three of Springboards, 6 months in NAS Sigonella, Sicily (1964) and a split to NS Rota, Spain (1966). In the spring of 1967 my self and another tech named Barry D. Burnor volunteered to join VP-8 on a 6 month tour to NS Sangley Point, Philippines. We returned in December of 1966 and I was discharged in March 1967, a decision I still regret. I joined a company called Vocaline and flew with my old CO Ray Gault out of NAS Brunswick, Maine in a P2V BUNO: 135558 call sign was "Stopsign", we tested sonobuoys. RITTER, ATR2 Doug d.d.ritter@verizon.net "...I was ready reserve with VP-662 from 1963 to 1965 and then stand by reserve in 1968. My active duty was on the USS Bennington CVS 20 from 1965 to 1967 on WesPac duty in the Tonkin gulf (Yankee Station). My final rank was ATR2 in the avionics shop. I trained for the APS-20 radar crew position but never really make it. Always wanted to fly in those beautiful P2V's. Used my GI Bill to get my commercial pilots license and have been flying other things since. I'm now a video television producer at NASA HQ..." [22OCT2003]

RIVAS, AVCM Ivan "Spock" Retired Ginns@aol.com "...I was an In-Flight Tech for VP-40 from 1974-1979. I often remember many of the happy time in the squadron. The AT shop with Skinny, Ron, Frank, Gary and the rest is etched in my memories. Loved watching those championship Acey-Duecy games. I would always post a picture of Mr. Spock over the CP-901 control panel. The handle kept it in place. http://www.lynxairways.com/..." [17APR2003]

RIZZIO, AD2 Frank fsrizzio@firehousemail.com "...I served with VX-4 from 1976 through 1980 as an Aviation Machinist Mate 2nd class under two commands (CAPTAIN Burnett and CDR Collicott). RIVERS, Daniel danielrivers@cox.net "...I enlisted in the Navy on July 31,1965. Did Boot Camp at Great Lakes,Illinois and from there I went to AMFU'A' School at NATTC NAS Millington, Tennessee. After school I was assigned to VP-30 Det NAS Jacksonville, Florida in May of 1966. I had some really great experiences in that squadron. The P2 became my favorite aircraft to both to work on and to fly in as part of an aircrew. I mainly flew as forward observer and trained as FE. In 1967 tragedy struck our squadron when one of our planes was involved in a mid air collision (27SEP67) with an F-8 Crusader. Some of our training missions were pretty hairy too. Especially the time we were returning from NS Roosevelt Roads, PR and had to fly through a thunder storm. That will get your attention. In October of 1968 I was reassigned to VS-30 NAS Boca Chica, Florida. After serving with the Old Pros of VP-30 though, working with the S2 was kind of a let down even though I got some Carrier time aboard the "Wasp" and the"Midway". There was something about the "Neptune" that no other plane could match not even the bigger and faster P-3. I extended my enlistment in 1969 to take the test for ADR3. I didn't make it and in May of 1970 I was discharged due to a reduction in force order. If I could do it all over again I definitely would but I would want to serve all of my time in the SP2H (P2V-7). I think most airmen who served with the "Mighty Neptune" would agree with me..." I am currently a support contractor for the P-3 Assistant Program Manager for Logistics (APML) at NAVAIR. I would like to hear from my old Shipmates around the globe. If you are still active and need help with logistics contact me..." [E-Mail Updated 14OCT2010 | 18SEP97]
