"...SCAFFIDI, AMH1 Richard V. "Moose"...ROSLYN, Pennsylvania (11 Apr 2008) — Family, friends and colleagues expressed their admiration for a deputy fire marshal and dive instructor who died while scuba diving in Bonaire. Richard V. Scaffidi, 50, of Roslyn, died April 1 while scuba diving with Buddy Dive Resort. Authorities in Bonaire declined comment on the fatal scuba diving accident and there was no mention of the tragedy in local print media including the Bonaire Reporter. Scaffidi was well-known and respected for his service to the community. For 21 years, he served as lieutenant and captain of the Roslyn Fire Company and was involved in outreach programs to local elementary schools. In addition to organizing various community events including the Fourth of July parade, Roslyn Christmas Tree Event and the Night Out in Abington, Scaffidi founded the swift water rescue program after flooding in the area in 1996. Retired from the U.S. Navy as AMH1 in 1998, he taught classses at Bucks County Community College and served as hazardous materials battalion chief. "If you looked up 'give the shirt off of your back,' there would be a picture of Rich in the dictionary," said Fire Marshal Ken Clark. As a scuba diving instructor with training in CPR and first aid, Scaffidi taught many people to scuba dive including his daughter Angela. "I was certified at 18 after I begged him to," Angela said, "but my mom said she wouldn't do it unless she had gills...he was the greatest man I ever knew and will be very sorely missed in the township." "...SCARBOROUGH, CAPT Wm. E. "Bill"...(VC-5, VP-10, VP-14, VP-72 and VPB-144)...Golden Eagle Emeritus CAPT William E. Scarborough, USN (Ret). Dear Golden Eagles, It is my sad duty to report that CAPT Bill Scarborough, USN (Ret) made his Last Take-off on 11 February 2013 at the Fleet Landing Health Center in Atlantic Beach, FL. He was 96. CAPT Scarborough is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Sarah K. Scarborough, sons William E. Scarborough, Jr and Michael Scarborough, daughter Kathryn Scarborough Noyes, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A full honors ceremony accompanied his interment at the Elmwood Cemetery in Columbia, SC on 15 February 2013. CAPT Scarborough enlisted in the United States Navy upon graduating from Columbia High School (SC) in 1935. After boot camp he served aboard the USS Erie and the USS Yorktown until 1938 when he was selected for flight training at Pensacola. He was a Third Class Petty Officer at the time and received his wings in 1939. After flight training he was assigned to VP-14 at NAS Norfolk, Virginia and flew PBY Catalina’s on North Atlantic patrols during which time his squadron took part in the search for the German Battleship Bismarck. Immediately following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, CAPT Scarborough’s squadron was sent to the Pacific theater to operate from seaplane bases in Noumea and Espirito Santo, where they took part in the Battle of the Coral Sea, the fight for Guadalcanal, and the Battle of Midway. He later served as Operations Officer of VPB-144 in the island-hopping campaign through the Central Pacific, and it was during this assignment that he received his commission to Lt (jg) in 1944. In the 1950’s, CAPT Scarborough was honored to be one of the few aviators selected to be a member of VC-5, the first Navy nuclear attack squadron. From 1952-1953 he served as Head of Safety Literature at the Naval Aviation Safety Activity (later the Naval Safety Center) and developed a report distributed to Fleet and Shore Stations entitled Weekly Aviation Safety Bulletin based on aircraft accident reports received by dispatch. The bulletin summarized those reports including recommended corrective actions, and in 1955 the bulletin was renamed Approach Magazine. CAPT Scarborough, whose decorations included the Distinguished Flying Cross, was the first enlisted pilot (NAP) to attain the rank of Captain, and during his career he was privileged to command VB 144 and VP 10. CAPT Scarborough retired from the Navy in 1964, but continued his service in the aviation industry as a flight safety engineer for Grumman Aerospace, most notably as a consulting pilot to the NASA astronauts in the Lunar Module program. He was a respected Naval Aviation historian and author, particularly well-known for his “In-Action” and “Walk-Around” books for Squadron Signal, as well as being a willing consultant to many other authors. We honor CAPT Scarborough’s dedicated and lifelong service to Naval Aviation and the Nation, and are further saddened by the loss of yet another member of the Greatest Generation. He will be missed. "...SCHAEFER, John O...My Father, John O. Schaefer, passed away this past Memorial Day 2003. He was a member of VP-3's P2V Neptune Crew 3, stationed in NAS Keflavik, Iceland, in 1953, the year I was born in Pensacola. He was a radar operator. I read that the P2V that hit the glacier on 12/17/53 had been found and remains returned (SEE: In Memorial for lost friends...15 December 1953). My Dad never spoke of it much, but he lost a good friend on that flight. A young man he went to electronics school with. As my Dad told it, what happened was that his crew, Crew 3, had taxied out for takeoff, but they were called back because they had flown too many missions. Crew 11 took over. My Dad said he didn't have time to even take his flight, or seabag, off the plane. Crew 11 took off and was lost. If my Dad's seabag was returned, is there any way I could have it, or its contents, returned to me? Highest regards. PS Thank you all for remembering. Attached to VAW-12. Air Maintenace support for the WillyFudds, I believe. Am looking to share a great picture I have of an Air Crew, in front of a plane, circa 1962 or 1963. Hand written on the back, by my father, are the words 'The crew from Norfolk N.A.S.' I also have Dad's saved Plan of the Day off of the USS Bogue (CVE-9) on V.E. Day and a corresponding picture of him in the Chief's mess on V.E. Day. I also have the well preserved picture of Dad with his Navy Boot Camp class from 1941 or 1942. Would any of this be of any interest to former Shipmates as Dad was fond of saying? A retired chief recently saw a picture I had posted of Dad on the NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada website & commented that it was remarkable that Dad had made chief in under 8 years. Actually, pictures tell the story that Dad made Chief in under four years, but of course that was during WW2. Looking to share photos with anyone interested. Thanks in advance..." My APS-20 school in Biloxi in 1958 helped out a lot. We flew 13614 for 1 year as we kept the same plane with the crew. On our way over we ron at Kwajelien and on take-off the pilots nesa cracked. We had to wait for a new one and had a good week of deep sea fishing. Fianlly made it to NAHA and VP-6 departed for NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii. Lots of young ladies left crying at the gate! We made many trips through the Tainan Straits which was exciting and/or boring depending what happened. Together with Crew 1, we went to Saigon for the first of the Market Time deployments in July 1964. We were the first two aircraft to fly the recon's and had a good time in Saigon. Both of the crews painted "Nose Art" on the planes and that became the fad for the deployment. Crew ONE had Snoopy sitting on top of a Tori Gate looking for Subs. Crew 8 had Johnny Oinen (our AO) paint a large swordfish with one of the "go to hell" hats from Saigon on its sword in rememberance of the good fishing on Kwaj. I remember the day ZE-6 (135555 or "triple nickle five") landed at NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan with a stuck gear. They jacked it up, dropped the gear and pinned it, replaced the props, ran up the 3350's and with a min crew returned to NAHA. And it made the flight back to NAS Whidbey Island, Washington. Returning to Ault Field the 135614 was sent to PAR (commonly called "paint and return"). I stayed in Crew 8 and picked up Buno 140971 as our "new" plane. If any of you remember me, you will remember I painted the radio compartment gold. We made the 1965 NAS Iwakuni, Japan deployment. Again making 2 trips down to Saigon for Market time. After some time back at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington, I left for VR-21 in Oct '66, went to VFP-63 at NAS Miramar in Oct'69, AVIB SCHOOL in June of 73, NAMTD-1013 MIRAMAR in March '74, CVW-11 STAFF as AVIONICS/FLIGHT DECK CHIEF in June'77 and retired in November 1978. Worked for Lockheed Marine Systems in San Diego for 16 years on the Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicles and retired from there in 1996. So, now all I do is play golf and keep house as my wife Sharon is still working for the San Diego City Schools. If any of you recognize the name or time, please drop an e-mail. I keep up on all of the Reunion and have been to quit a few. VR/AEW/VP etc. So, drop a line and let me know how it goes..." [03JAN2000]

SCHARFE, ATN Ellwood J. (Jim) jscharfe@fredward.com "...I enlisted in the Navy in June 1960. After going to avionics school at NAS Memphis, Tennessee, I served with VP-24 at NAS Norfolk, Virginia from 1961 until I was diischarged in July of 1963. I was an ATN ground pounder. I went to the NAS radio school and flew as a second radio operator with several crews although I was never a regular crew member. We went on several overseas deployments. The deployment that was the most fun was to Ireland where we were on some sort of joint program with the RAF and the French Airforce. It was great because I was young (18) and single, and there were so many girls. Also Kennedy was President and he was Irish, and so the Irish loved us. We also went to NAS Keflavik, Iceland in the summer time. I remember coming out of a night club on the Keflavik Airport at closing time and the sun was still up. And of course the most exciting deployment was to NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba during the missle crisis. We arrived at night and were put aboard buses and taken to our barracks. The next morning was a rude awakening when as we went to the mess hall on the same road we had taken the night before we saw all of the marines dug into their bunkers with their mortars, and machine guns. There were some good times though. Perry Como and his USO troop put on a show. When he arrived at NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba we were there to see him get off the plane, and this black guy, who was a friend of mine from the AT shop, I can't remember his name, called to Perry and said "Mr. Como, remember me". Come to find out, this guy used to be the shoe shine boy in Mr. Como's barber shop before he became a star. Yes, Perry remembered him. They hugged and cried. It was very heart warming. We also had a thanksgiving meal in Cuba. All the turkey and dressing we could eat. All through this the planes were flying over the Russian ships taking pictures of the missles on the decks. I didn't know then, but I realize now, what an important mission we were on, and how close we were to a nuclear war..." [24DEC2003]

We took VR flights out of there with the Skymasters C-54's and a Marine C-119 to El Toro and USAF EC-121 Picket Ship Connie to McCoy AFB in Orlando (now Orlando International) for Mickey Mouse. Pranks played on our crew included popping the fuse to the heater to freeze the relief tube when you took a leak at altitude, lunch boxes with fish heads added on a long flight and dead fish in our air intake vents, forgetting to haul in your trailing antenna until just before your landing flare, and lighting up commercial fishing boats with your H.I. wingtip light.
