REFLECTIONS
by Stu Stebbings, Cdr., USN, Ret. (Lt[jg] in VP-1)

Last summer's (1997) reunion was an emotional roller coaster for many of us. It felt soooo good; some of us want to do it again and again. The core VP-1 POPs Committee is working on that for the year 2000 but it turns out, this committee association work is quite labor intensive. Just the logistics of collecting the $10 membership fee is time consuming and can get expensive. Then we want to be sending out newsletters to keep folks interested and informed. Most of all we are trying to plan the next reunion and that's going to be our biggest challenge. The Bellingham reunion was a knockdown, bang-up success, no doubt about it. So, where to have the next one and who is going to put it on? The West Coast folks are sensitive to those living on the East Coast and would like to give them "Easterners" a chance to hold the next reunion near their own turf. Memphis and Pensacola keep getting mentioned. The difficult part is finding enough crew willing and able to take on the actual site planning, including a possible reunion dinner, reunion day, accommodations, food, preparation, cooking, and cleaning, to mention a few. We had quite a large crew working many hours to pull it off in Bellingham. Don't know if we have a core group large enough to do this elsewhere. Anyone out there interested?

Another little challenge is what to do with the folks who we know deep down inside would like to be members, but just haven't found the time to part with the $10 dues. The names and addresses of non-members will always be included on the Master Roster, however, we are financially forced to drop them off the active mailing list cause it costs money to continue to mail them information. Maybe all they need is a gentle reminder but how do you do that without "spending down" the budget. So far we have 124 full time members. The numbers keep growing, but slowly. Oh, what to do.
