   U.S. Navy Aircraft 1921-1941, U.S. Marine Corps Aircraft 1914-1959: Two Classics in One Volume [Appendix D Squadron Insignia] by William T. Larkins "...The second insignia of Patrol Squadron Four, adopted in place of the rainbow circle, depicted the Griffin, an imaginary creature of Greek mythology with the body and legs of a lion and the wingsand beak of an eagle.  Figuratively, the Griffin implies a vigilant and repellant guardian.  In medieval Latin the word also signifies "a kind of ship."  The Griffin is superimposed upon the numeral four.  Colors: Griffin, orange and gold.  Numeral, white.  Field, light blue. VP-4 to VP-22..."  [10SEP98]
