Bayless graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in May 1979 with a degree in Systems Engineering. He was designated a Naval Aviator in April of 1981 and completed Fleet Replacement training at VP-30 in November of that same year. From December 1981 to December 1984, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless was assigned to VP-16 in NAS Jacksonville, Florida. During his tour he was designated a Patrol Plane Commander and Mission Commander making deployments to NAS Bermuda, NS Rota, Spain, and NAS Keflavik, Iceland. The "War Eagles" were recognized with a Battle E, the Golden Wrench, and three Meritorious Unit Commendations during this period. In January of 1985, he reported to VT-27 in NAS Corpus Christi, Texas as an Instructor Pilot in the T-34C Mentor. As a Flight Leader and solo check pilot, he instructed in Basic Familiarization, Radio Instruments, Night Navigation, and Precision Acrobatics. After affiliating with the Naval Reserve, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless reported to the "Executioners" of VP-93 in November of 1989 at NAF Detroit, Michigan. During this tour, he served as Department Head for Administration, Operations, and Maintenance. He led armed patrols in Operation Sharp Guard supporting UN sanctions against the former Yugoslav Republics and also flew sorties during Support Democracy and Able Manner supporting the UN sanctioned embargo of Haiti. With the disestablishment of VP-93, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless received orders in the spring of 1994 to VP-68 at NAF Andrews, Maryland. He served as an Executive Assistant and then as the Executive Officer of the "Black Hawks". While attached to VP-68, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless supported multiple operations throughout the Mediterranean and the Caribbean to include counter narcotics missions from Roosevelt Roads, Key West, and Howard AFB in Panama. In June of 1996, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless reported aboard VP-66 in NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, as the PCO and took command the following month. The "Liberty Bells" won the CNO Safety Award for 1996 and 1997 as well as the MPA International Symposium Competition for ASW Excellence during his tenure. In November of 1997, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless assumed the duties of Executive Officer NR CINCUSNAVEUR 513 (CNE 513) at Great Lakes, Ill. The command received the Leo V. Bilger Award for outstanding Surface Augment Unit that year. During this period, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless was selected to become the first East Coast Facilitator of the Navy's Culture Workshop process representing COMNAVAIRLANT. His next assignment was CO of NR Tactical Support Center 472 (TSC 472) from October 1998 to September of 1999. TSC 472 provided watch officers for NATO Operations Allied Force and Noble Anvil from TSC Sigonella in support of highly visible Balkan missions. Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless then commanded NR Battle Group Staff Eight (BGS-8) at Forest Park, Ill., from October 1999 to September 2001. While supporting COMCRUDESGRU EIGHT, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless deployed with IKEBATGRU and also served as the Deputy JFACC for Unified Endeavor. He subsequently took command of NR CINCUSNAVEUR Joint Task Force Contingency Unit 413 (CNE JTFCU 413) in October 2001. During this command tour, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless was recalled to active duty from April 2002 to March 2003 as Deputy Commander, Task Force Five Seven at NAVCENT NSA Bahrain in support of Enduring Freedom. He was nominated for Flag rank in February 2003. Among his awards are four Meritorious Service Medals and the Navy Achievement Medal. He has attended the National Defense University's NATO Staff Officer Course, the Reserve Components National Security Course, and CINCLANTFLT's Senior Officer Course. Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless is also the Vice President of the Detroit Metro Chapter of the Navy League and has sat on numerous promotion and selection boards. My career following A school graduation included a short stint with VA-205 in 1975, then on to VA-34 in A-6E's, culminating in two med cruises aboard the USS JFK by August 1977. Went on to VR-54 Detachment NAS Atlanta, Georgia flying C-118's as a FCO and Flight Attendant until 1981 (Plank Owner with VR-46 at NAS Atlanta, Georgia), when I moved up to VR-52 at NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. Stayed almost until the very end with the C-118's and got snatched up just in January 1985 by VP-66 at the "Grove". Flew P-3A & B's as an FCO with VP-66, then VP-68 at NAF Washington, D.C. until 1992 when I moved back to NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania and finished my career at the Naval Air Reserve ASW Training Center (RESASWTRACEN) retiring in April 1995. Larry served with VP-66, VP-68, VP-92 and NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. Larry is going to be cremated without a funeral service. Katie and the family want to invite everyone to join in a memorial service there in FL, maybe in a couple of weeks. This will allow the family some time to grieve together and also allow people to make travel plans. He graduated from Naval Air Reserve Training Unit, Memphis, Tennessee, CO. #26-71 on February 5th,1971, followed by AMS "A" School at Naval Air Technical Training Center Millington, Tennessee. His first duty assignment as a SELRES was with augment units of VS-63 / VS-73 out of NAF Detroit, Michigan, earning Plane Captain on the S2E Tracker. In April 1975, he voluntary recalled to active duty to support the decommissioning of the E1-B squadron RVAW-110 onboard USS Hancock (CV 19) at close of the Vietnam Conflict. He was later reassigned to NAS Whidbey Island, Washington with VA-128 and VA-52, featuring the A-6E Intruder. He left the service in 1977, settling in NAS Whidbey Island, Washington and earning an Associate Arts Degree from Skagit Valley College. He worked as grounds keeping foreman at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington for two years and served as a tour guide with Princess Cruises of Seattle for eight summer seasons throughout the Pacific Northwest, north to Alaska. During the off seasons, he owned and operated the home repair service C & C Handiworks for ten years. In 1978, he reaffiliated as a SELRES with NAS 4089 supporting 500 Division at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington, AIMD. In 1981 he was assigned to the EA-6A squadron VAQ 309, earning recognition as "AXEMAN 1985 Sailor of the Year." As an AMS2 in September of 1986, he came on active duty as a TAR and was assigned to NAR Whidbey as a Non-Destructive Inspector (NDI) Operator. In 1987, he transferred to NAS Glenview, Illinois as station NDI Technician, 500 Division. He quickly advanced to E-6, and while working in Quality Assurance, became a Chief in September of 1990. In 1991, he transferred to SH-2G Fleet Introduction Team Commander Helicopter Wing Reserve (FIT CHWR), NAS North Island, San Diego, California as Technical Manual Specialist overseeing the contractor rewrite of 55 / SH-2G maintenance manuals, ultimately assigned as the FIT Coordinator. He served as the H-2 Systems Desk for CHWR, overseeing helicopter community issues. In 1995 he transferred to HSL-94 as the SH-2G system specialist, serving as Maintenance Control Chief, QAO, and Training Officer. He performed as Helicopter Detachment CPO on five shipboard detachments onboard the USS Samuel Elliot Morrison (FFG 13), USS Clark (FFG 11) USS Estocin (FFG 15), and USS Inchon (MCS 12). He also served as the detachment coordinator on four detachments to AUTEC Torpedo Range, Andros Island. In 1999 he transferred to VP-66 at NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania as Safety/NATOPS CPO, Divisional and Supply Dept CPO, and served as the Maintenance Control/DET CPO on three detachments with the P-3C maintenance team on Caribbean Drug Enforcement operations. Joined VP-0810 NAS South Weymouth, Massachusetts then moved across the hall to VP-92 as an FCO/Instructor in P-3As and P-3Bmods from 1979 to 1985. Broke service for a few years then I then went to VP-64 NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania as FCO/Instructor/IFT in P-3As again then P-3C Update 2s as IFT from 1989 to 1994, and finally down the hall to VP-66 in P-3C Update 2s and EP-3Js (we got them from VAQ-33 when they were distestablished) as IFT until I retired in July 1998. Didn't stop working on P-3s then, though, went to Lockheed Martin Greenville, SC for the next 5 1/2 years working on the P-3 AIP Mod program as an Avionics Post Mod tester until this last March, when I moved to Marietta, GA to work on the F/A-22 program. HICKEY, 59, of Palmyra, NJ, an insurance executive and US Naval Reserve retiree, died on Monday of bladder cancer. Jim attended Palmyra HS and Bordentown Military Academy. During a 40-year career in the insurance industry, Jim held executive positions with several companies including AIG in Philadelphia and New York and AWAC in Bermuda. Jim was also retired from the US Naval Reserve, at the rank of Master Chief Aircraft Maintenanceman (E-9). His 28-year Navy career included 24 years with VP-66 NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. LaBeouf, a native of Rochester, New York, graduated from the State University of New York at Albany in 1975. He was commissioned through Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida, in May 1980, and was designated a Naval Flight Officer in May 1981. Captain LaBeouf's first operational assignment was with the "Skinny Dragons" of VP-4 NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii. He served with them from February 1982, to May 1985, holding the positions of Legal Officer and NATOPS Officer. In June 1985, he was assigned to VP-31 as a flight instructor. Captain LaBeouf was selected for the Full Time Support (formerly TAR) program in January, 1986. In addition to his flight instructor duties, he was an instructor for the Tactical Training Team. In May 1988, he left VP-31 for NAS South Weymouth, Massachusetts, where he served as the Aviation Training Officer for the next year. He then moved to VP-92 where he held the positions of Training Officer and Maintenance Officer for the "Minutemen." In June 1991, Captain LaBeouf reported to the Naval Air Reserve ASW Training Center, NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, as the Senior Evaluator of the Commander Naval Air Reserve Force P-3 NATOPS Evaluation Team. His next assignment was to VP-66 as the Aviation Maintenance Officer. In October 1993, he assumed the duties as Officer-in-Charge of VP-66. During his tenure, the "Liberty Bells" transitioned to the P-3C UII aircraft and added two unique EP-3J aircraft with their Electronic Warfare Training mission to the squadron. In December 1994, he reported to the staff of Commander Reserve Patrol Wing Atlantic where he held the positions of Maintenance, Operations and Administration Officer. Captain LaBeouf reported onboard NAS Brunswick, Maine in June 1997, to stand up VQ-11 and became the squadron's first Commanding Officer in an establishment ceremony in August 1997. For the next two years his squadron of electronic EP-3J's trained surface and air units from every U.S. battle group as well as many allies in the Electronic Warfare mission. Captain LaBeouf was next assigned to OPNAV N512, Navy Warfare Policy and Doctrine. When terrorists attacked the USS Cole, he was attached to the Secretary of the Navy's Antiterrorism Task Force until his departure in July 2001. He attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces for the next year and graduated with a Masters of Science in National Resource Strategy in the class of 2002. In July 2002, he reported to the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs as the Director of Readiness. During his time in this joint tour he was responsible for the Department of Defense's actions that resulted in rebalancing the active and reserve force mix for all seven Reserve components. In August 2004, Captain LaBeouf assumed command of Naval Air Reserve, NAS Brunswick, Maine where he is responsible for 20 augment units and two aviation squadrons comprising over 800 selected reservists. Captain LaBeouf's awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (second award), Navy Commendation Medal (fourth award), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (third award), and various other unit and campaign ribbons. While stationed in NAS South Weymouth, Massachusetts, he built a Steen Skybolt, a two seat open cockpit biplane that he flew for fun and in competition. The Task Force was a coalition of 40 plus aircraft from 8 countries flying out of 7 sites with 1,200 personnel. Sadly, since I left CTF-57 I have not been in a P-3. I've been attached to CSG-12, COMPHIBGRUTWO and Second Fleet. Currently I'm serving a year long deployment on the ground in Afghanistan with CJTF Phoenix mentoring the Afghan National Security Forces (Army, Police, Intel) in setting up a new joint coordination network. She attended ROTC at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, earning a BS in both Biology and Russian. She was commissioned in December 1988. CDR O'Brien's first tour of duty after commissioning was as a general unrestricted line officer assigned to the Bureau of Naval Personnel, Washington, DC. She worked as Assistant VP Placement Officer and ACIP/ACP Officer until being selected for flight training in December 1989. After basic aviation training at NAS Pensacola, Florida and advanced navigator training at Mather AFB, CA, she earned her Naval Flight Officer wings in July 1991. She reported to Oceanographic Development Squadron EIGHT (VXN-8), NAS Patuxent River, Maryland in September 1991.
