We flew a JD (actually a B-26 Martin Marauder) and all the AD's as platforms for pulling sleeves for the surface fleet to shoot at. The C.O. was CDR. Gordon (crash) Duncan. I recall the WV's (all Super Connies, with Radomes on top) from Guam coming there to ride out a typhoon. They sat on the pad as I recall for 2-3 days turned up pointed into the wind. I was there when Nam was becoming active and one day we were rolling out and saw a U-2 lift off the run way. NO ONE even knew it was there. He joined the US Navy in 1953, and had a 20 year career in naval aviation which would take him all over the Pacific. He proudly served with VU-5 at NAS Atsugi, Japan from 1955 to 1959, VU-7 at NAS North Island, San Diego, California and Brown Field in 1954, VP-4 at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii at NAF Naha, Okinawa, Japan from 1962 to 1963, VP-30 at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland) and retired out of VP-50 at NAS Moffett Field, California in 1973. He later worked at Ford Aerospace and the Kennedy Space Center in spacecraft electrical engineering. Joe's wife Dorothy preceded him in death just a few months ago. He leaves behind two children, John Blum (Diane) of San Jose, CA, and Nancy Wilson (Neil) of Lafayette, CA; three step-children, Stephanie Zimmerman (Dean) of Titusville, FL, Wendy Taylor (Bobby) of Duncan, SC, and Dwane Church (Kim) of Moore, SC; 15 grandchildren; and a sister, Barbara Medlock of SC..." I never flew in that aircraft. 3 AD5'S #22, 23 and 24 were the main stay aircraft and an SNB was added towards the end of my service. I was an AMH3 worked in the structural shop for chief Jess Geraro and flew aircrew, Right seat and the reels. Had a few fun incidences and of course helped trap pigs. When a Boar was in the trap all worked stopped while we went to get it and the mess guys would butcher it for us. Great experiences with great guys and pilots. Love to here from anyone from that era. Aircraft 23 was BUNO: 33856. Aircraft 24 still had not been painted with the grey, yellow and high visability orange when I arrived I painted it. We were the Workhorse of the Luzon and Our patch has a carabao pulling a bucket I still have mine with other odds and ends..." [01APR2002]

Also in the crew that made a wheels up landing at NAS Cubi Point, Philippines in 1967. Retired from the Navy in 1974, then worked for 21 years with Boeing Aircraft Company. In 1968 returned to Shin Meiwa Aircraft Company in Osaka, Japan to assist in starting some production work for the Boeing 767 Aircraft. The OGU from Bainbridge was composed of all the draft leftovers that accumalated after a period of time that caused the last names of the draft to begin with w,x,y, and z. We were shipped to NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island and bussed to VJ-15, for roster call. The Leading Chief was a gray haired guy with hash marks to the groung. When he started to take the roster, after about six names he said what the hell? He never saw so many names that were at the end of the alphabet. Anyways were all split up and assigned to fill in empty slots in the squadron jobe or tasks. After a year and some months I was was sent to NAS Norfolk, Virginia to be assigned to the TDD-5 unit there that was a field unit of VU-5...." [03DEC2002]
