We shared the electric shop with VP-8 (our sister squadron). VP-8 had two electricians named Chief Ohm and AE1 Watts! Transferred to the NAIRDEV Unit at NAS South Weymouth, Massachusetts from 1954-1956. Our CO CDR Hart had also been my CO at VP-7. I worked on his Model A car several times. Reported to VW-15 at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland from 1956-1959. Flew on the barrier flights out of NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada (those were some hairy flights). I was then assigned to NATTC NAS Jacksonville, Florida for AE-A school instructor duty from 1959-1963. Looking back, I enjoyed this tour of duty. Transferred back to NAS Patuxent River, Maryland to Project Magnetic (VXN-8) from 1963-1967. As far as I can tell, our three aircraft were the only aircraft in the Navy to have "nose art". The two Super Connies had the "Road Runner" and "El Coyote", the R5D had a "Kiwi bird". Was a great outfit if you wanted to flew around the world. Transferred to VT-4 after making AECS in latter part of 1966. I served with VT-4 from 1967-1968. Reported to VA-86 aboard CVA-66 USS America on patrol in the Tonkin Gulf from 1968-1969. Some of our squadron pilots perform spotter duty for the battleship, I believe the New Jersey, during off shore shelling. Returned to the NAS Norfolk, Virginia after stops in Sidney Australia, Wellington NZ, and Rio Brazil. What a way to spend over 20 years in the Navy. I was a technical writer at LTV A7 aicraft test equipment from 1969-1978. I went to work as technical writer at General Dynamics Fort Worth, TX. from 1978-1993. Wrote electrical maintenance manuals on F-16, F-111, (Navy's A-12, cancelled 1991), F-22. Lockheed acquired Fort Worth General Dynamics Division in spring of 1993. I retired from Lockheed in November 1993. I have had a great time, would love to back up and do it all over again. If any of you out there remmeber me, give me call on the ole net..." CASTRO, AOC Albert Retired aacastro@juno.com "...After my initial P-3 training with VP-31 Moffett Field, California, in March of 1971 I started my first VP operational tour as an Aircrew Ordnanceman with VP-4 NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii. I remember Sherald Juneau the Flight Engineer who became like a brother to me. The fellow Ordies Bob McCoy, Andy "Ord" Anderson, Bob McKinney, Vic Teem, Bill Maye, Glen Schleusser, Howell Robins, Charles Roberson, and of course the two brothers Jim and Rob Jenkins. Pilots like Jim Messegee, Skip Dale, and Bill Broadwell, who cared. Never forget the Cocos Island departing flyby. Everything was just Hunky-Dori. The deployments, detachments, and visits to Japan, Taiwan, Diego Garcia, Australia, Guam, Wake, Philippine Islands, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam are memories burnt into my mind. Never to forget Wichita Det. After five years with the Skinny Dragons I transferred in April of 1976 to shore duty. I had to get back into flight status. So in July of 1978 I transferred into VP-19 Moffett Field, California. I remember the Ordies most of all Randy Corman, Duck Carter, Reno Dickson, Johnny King, Steve Harris, Frank Pesich, and Perry Veto. Drivers like Ray Morris and Don Hefkin both of them pretty boys. I visited a number locations including, Adak, Okinawa, Singapore, Korea, and Iran. Made a number of site revisits, including back to Hawaii for those quarterly torpedo qualifications. Of course we always had to have a full Ordie load team on all those Hawaii flights. After four and a half years with Big Red, and thinking I had enough of West Pac in January of 1983 I transferred to the Naval Air Development Center (NADC), Warminster, Pennsylvania. I remember Bob Flangan, Dale Cain ("Best Man"), and an Ordie named Ron Jerasa. My aircrew shore duty at NADC had me deploying to NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada, NAS Bermuda, and the Virgin Islands. In November of 1985 I reported to Oceanographic Development Squadron Eight (VXN-8) at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. During my duty with VXN-8 the World Travelers there was Barry (Hank) Evitts, JD Patterson, Tim Mattson, and Bill Lomba, who I remember most as I was stationed with all four in prior commands (repeat offenders). The civilians Jeff Kerling (Admiral Kerlingus), and Pete Kupstas (Stinky Pete) hit the beach with the rest of us. Then there were the Flight Engineers that no one could ever forget Ed Matteson, Greg Valdez, and Jimmy Danials. What a bunch of great guys, and there was many more, I just had to name a few. While assigned to the World Travelers I made detachments to England, Iceland, Greenland, Portugal, Norway, Scotland, and Spain. After 17 years as a Naval Aircrewman, in December 1989, I reported for my final tour in the Navy with the Naval Aviation Maintenance Office at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. I retired from the United States Navy in April of 1992. Currently I am providing direct staff technical support to the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIRSYSCOM) Program Manager for Aviation Training Systems (PMA205), for acquisition and life cycle support of airborne weapons systems. Living in La Plata, Maryland and working in the Patuxent River area, I get to see a few of the old P-3 squadron mates..." [E-Mail Updated 09AUG2005 | 27MAR2001]

EATON, ADCS Richard Retired RichardGM211@aol.com "...I started my career with VXN-8. In those days it was called OASU, but I was there as a ground-pounder for all the subsequent name changes. I left the squadron just as we were getting the P-3's and went to NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island and joined the Checkmates of VS-22. Made the final cruises of both the USS Wasp and the USS Intrepid and onto the USS Saratoga. We locked the doors when we left NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island and on to NAS Cecil Field, Jacksonville, Florida. I was dragged kicking and screaming off the Sara in '76 while on a Med cruise because I received orders to RTC Great Lakes for duty as a Company Commander for 3 years. I was assigned to VP-23 in late 1979. I caught up with the Seahawks on deployment in NAS Keflavik, Iceland. Served for a while as the Line CPO and then was picked up for local instuctor duty TAD to CPWL. I finished out my career at NAS Brunswick, Maine working as the HRM Officer, teaching the CPO and PO Indoc courses, the "Skid School" and the Motorcycle Safety Course.
