Active duty from February 1958 until May 1962. After boot-camp it was on to 'P' school in NAS Norman, Oklahoma. Then to AT 'A' school in NAS Millington, Tennessee. Then on to NAS Brunswick, Maine, where I served in GCA Unit 21 and later Ground Electronics (ET billet). Next, it was on to VP-26, also at NAS Brunswick, Maine. However, I joined the squadron at NAS Keflavik, Iceland. After returning to NAS Brunswick, Maine, I was assigned to a flight crew (LK-3) [P2V5] as a radar operator. Several deployments to NAS Key West, Florida and NS Roosevelt Roads, PR.

Notice  I was an RM2 on the CFAW-11 staff (call sign Fiddle) in 1970. I’ve been trying to determine the three VP squadrons I communicated with during that time but have been unsuccessful. At that time the Commander FAW-11 had the designation as Commodore. I left NAS Jacksonville, Florida in late October 1970 to return to the University of Tennessee.

Memorial  CHRISTENSEN, PO3 Peter Dallan
My father was Peter Dallan Christensen, Petty Officer 3rd class and member of VP-9 stationed out of NAS Alameda, California, and later NAS Kodiak, Alaska flying P2V Neptunes. It is nearly 1 year since he passed away at the age of 86. He was a company and aerial photographer and had boxes of pictures from his time in the Navy. He was present and photographed the USS Nautilus (SSN-571) when it navigated under the North Pole. He always shared many grand stories and adventures of his time in the Navy with me and my siblings, as well as his grandchildren. I know he would like a mention here to any former shipmates of his passing. Its sad to see so many great Navy personnel slip away to the passage of time. RIP.

Shipmate  Shipmate Pix HERMANN, LtCol John D.
I flew with VP-5, VP-8 and VP-10 as a Flight Surgeon at NAS Souda Bay, Crete, Greece. I was watching a documentary for VP-5 and reflecting on what an incredible deployment I had in support of the VP crews at NAS Souda Bay, Crete, Greece in 2003. As a rated Air Force aviator I discovered how amazing the Patrol Squadron community really was and how easily I accepted as a member of each squadrons I flew with and cared for as a flight doc. I was onboard a P-3 the night Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) kicked off and had a front row seat from the cockpit. There are many other memorable events at the beginning of OIF, from wondering what I was doing wrong as a Pilot as the Orion oscillated up and down and I discovered how crew members could introduce a FNG to the P3. I ate the best damn breakfast burritos overlooking the rising sun and remembed hoping the smell of bacon was not a hallucination. I remember flying along the Syrian coast and the Command Pilot pointing to a map and saying," DOC, this line that is the difference between a soutine patrol and an international incident!" When things started getting hot over the AO, someone high up decided they did want to list the AF Flight Doc on some incident roster if something bad happened so I was nicely grounded. Flying in the EC130 counting SAMs being launched at us didn't seem much safer. I flew enough hours that I earned an Air Force Air Medal and my experience with the Patron community remains one of my greatest experiences of my 27 year military career. If I had been a younger man and not have a civilian medical practice waiting back home, I would have done a service transfer and continued to fly the P-3 with the great VP crews I was assigned to at NAS Souda Bay, Crete, Greece and OIF. My nephew is a surface warfare maintenance officer for the last of the Navy's LCS ships and I often think about stopping by one of the VP squadrons to say hello but they drag me away because I think they are worried that it would take much for me to reup as a old salty flight doc. Thanks for listening and letting me ramble on about spending time on Combat Patrols that seem more like fun than danger. Semper Primus

My name is Wesley Dean Popplewell, grandson of LCDR Lachlan Burdette Popplewell. Served June 1941 thru June 1963. He served with VP-46 and VP-MS-2 flying the PBM. He was based at NAS North Island, San Diego, California. I’ve recently discovered a box in my father’s attic containing a treasure trove of my grandfather’s navy history. As a pilot and writer, I’m trying to collect as much information of my grandfather’s unit and if possible, stories of him to write a biography. LCDR Popplewell passed away in 1984. Any information or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

After recruiting I went to NAS Jacksonville, Florida for Inflight Technician schooling and landed at VP-24 in NAS Jacksonville, Florida. After Twenty-Four I transferred to VP-45 and did a back-to-back sea tour to stay in NAS Jacksonville, Florida. After VP-45, I landed at NAMTRAGRUDET in Jax as an IFT Instructor. Retirement in 1994 pushed me into the world of PCs and computer networking. After some experience I landed a community college tenure-track job in IT. Notice
I served with VP-18 (06/67-09/68) and flew with Crew-5. I was involved in a near mid air collision with an F8 while flying with another crew that was bringing an admiral from NS Roosevelt Roads, PR to NAF Andrews, Maryland. We were flying over Virginia when a pilot that just received his wings was showing off to some friends by doing steep dives and climbs in partly cloudy conditions. Another crew member was sitting in the nose seat and I was kneeling next to him enjoying flying over land for a change when the F8 suddenly appeared having just leveled off from his last dive. Both pilots banked hard right and avoided a collision by feet. Entire event was over in seconds. After leaving NAF Andrews, Maryland we flew to NAS Minneapolis, Minnesota for several days as several of the crew had relatives there before returning to NS Roosevelt Roads, PR. Anyone out there remember this incident?

Mishaps  VP-31 Mishap - May 26th, 1972
Regarding the missing P-3 Orion that disappeared over Monterey Bay California on May 26th 1972. God bless the souls of all on board and all there loved ones left behind to figure out what happened on that day. I was stationed at NAS Moffett Field, California 1969/1970 and was on the flight crew on the P-3’s. I was and Airman and flew as an Aft Observer on many flights that flew that same path as the missing plane. Basically we were training student pilots and flew out Monterey bay on most flights and then did touch and goes at NAS Moffett Field, California upon our return each day. I just wanted to add that while over Monteray bay we had several close calls with other aircraft. I reported these to the pilot each time usually around 3 or 4 o’clock high or low. So just wondering if any other aircraft of any kind had be reported missing that day? Seems other planes can show up very fast and unnoticed at times through the clouds or fog out there. Could there have been a quick action to divert a collision? P.S. To my best recollection we did had one or two Simulators in the big Blimp hanger there at Moffat during those years.

Little to no information seems to be available. I am trying to ensure they are remembered, at least on Findagrave. If anyone can assist, it would be greatly appreciated. I have located three crew members thus far, LT(jg) Sadler, Ens Guinan, JR, and my cousin, T.M. Twyman. Thank you.

Notice  In early 1992 I deployed to OSAN AFB with the Colorado Air National Guard (flying F-16's at that time) to participate in Team Spirit. I worked in the OSAN Weather Detachment for a couple of months. One morning I briefed a pilot from VQ-5. I told him his unit patch was the coolest I'd seen. Later in the day he returned and gave me a patch. I'm giving it to my grandson along with information about the unit.

Shipmate  HANCOCK, PH3 Robert L. "Bob"
I served with VAP-61 (06/1961-12/1963) with deployments to NAS Cubi Point, Philippines and NAS Atsugi, Japan. I worked in photo line and photo lab. VAP-61 was first duty station out of photo A school. Left Guam in December 1963 for USNOTS NAS China Lake, California. My wife and I have good memories of Guam, she was my high school sweet heart and came out to Guam where we were married in December 1961. We lived at the Naval Station, in the Old Tipalao housing area. Would like to hear from any Shipmates out there.

Memorial  HERRINGSHAW, Neil D.
My father, Neil Herringshaw, passed away December 17, 2009. Dad served with VAP-61 during the Vietnam war. I am looking for Shipmates that knew my father and might share fond memories of him. It’s been 15 years since he has passed but I still miss him like it was yesterday. I am also curious as to what he did during the war. I ran out of time to ask him all the things I wanted to know.

Mishaps  VP-31 Mishap - March 6th, 1969
I was a radio operator and instructor on the P-3 Orion and worked out of the AT shop from 1967 to 1969. I was scheduled to be on RP-07 on the day of the crash in March but switched with Mike Merz the day before. Its been hard thinking about Mike and his family ever since that day. I traded the early morning flight for the afternoon flight since I worked on the night shift in the AT shop and Mike was on the early morning shift. It made for a long day if you came in at 4:30AM and then your flight wasnt until the afternoon around 2:00pm or when ever the flight got back and was refuled and ready to fly again. When I came in for the prefight check in the shop at around 1:30 everyone looked at me like I was a ghost my name was still on a couple schuleds for the early flight . Really hit hard what had happened. RIP Mike.

I served with VP-11 (01/1956-9/1956) straight out of boot camp in January 1956. After cleaning the the chiefs barracks four months as a non designated airman I was assigned to the ae branch. Due to an injury, I was transferred out in September. We deployed to Malta and some of our P2V7 were un painted. I can’t seem to find any photos or Neptune patch too.
