I was on a plane coming back to NAS Moffett Field, California that fateful day of 26OCT78 when PD4 crashed (VP9/October 78 "We are Ditching! Ditching! Ditching!") into the sea near NAS Adak, Alaska. When we landed all that greeted us were happy to see us since they thought it was our plane that went down. I lost some good friends on that flight but they will always be rememered in our hearts. GEBHARDT, AME2 Thomas itttom@home.com "...I started off green with VP-60 at NAS Glenview, Illinois in 86 - 91. It was odd because I joined the Navy to get away from home and get stationed 2 hours from my hometown. Enjoyed every minute I was there, and enjoyed the times we had as "Bear" stated on Lake Michigan or a shore over seas. I thought I was never going to make it from the ranks of E-3 so I made the choice to jump to F-14's and signed up with VF-201 at NAS Dallas, Texas in 91 and quickly made E-5. Jumped up to QAR and unfortunately saw a fellow Shipmates loose his life in a training exercise that really messed me up. The VF and VP communities are so different it was really shocking, but was just as fun (Even though we didn't go over seas). Again I made a lot of new friends and have great memories. I learned a lot while I was in the TAR community, and am very grateful for that. I currently reside in Indianapolis and work for Consumer Electronics Manufacture. I went to school after I left the service and received an Associates Degree and 2 Bachelors degrees in Electronics. I am married to a wonderful female and have two great children (boy and girl). Drop me a line I would love to hear from everyone..." [02JAN2001]

AE1 P.E. White, Chief Red Dog and Chief Hernandez are some names I remember. I was treated as a grown man even though some of us were only 18. It wasn't a bad way to grow up. Loved the P5M flying boats but wouldn't dare get on one now! Also, looking at the tribute to the four guys killed (November 11th, 1956) when the first boat taking off from the NAF Lajes, Azores, Portugal to return to the states creamed in with a crew from our sister squadron from Norfolk aboard. I found it in the CO's flight suit hanging in the NAS Cubi Point, Philippines Quarters :-). My tour finished with the Red Shirts and I had some fun at last getting everyone qualifed at the shooting range. I separated with 1800 hours of flight time and over 100 carrier landings. Some how the base found out that I was a commissaryman so it was back to the base bakery for me. Paul was already working there. We both enjoyed working there it was a lot easier there than the ship.
